If making a public forum, what about spider bots, bots, etc -- is it a problem?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you confused on what bots are, or how they reach your site?

As far as I know bots are usually from search engines which are trying to identify your website's content. They can only detect content viewable publicly. That's why private forums may not benefit well with their secrecy due to this fact.

I dont think that bots are a problem to the website/forum/blog. As they tell search engines as to what content is available on the site.
