This is one for the books if it would push through – Floyd Mayweather will be fighting Conor McGregor, currently the most popular mixed martial arts fighter. Mayweather is staking his undefeated record of 49 wins and the fight will be in the boxing ring, meaning the rules of boxing will be followed. So what would happen to McGregor’s MMA skills? All of those interviewed about this novelty of a fight were unanimous in their choice that Mayweather will win, hands down. My question is this – how can a mixed martial arts fighter apply his skills when the fight is under boxing rules? Will this be a fight that is nice to watch?

Mixed Martial Arts simply means studying different styles and normally martial arts is split into three types: Striking, Grappling and Ground fight. Boxing is a Striking style and a lot of MMA practitioners do Boxing or a type of boxing, ie, Muay Thai, Kick boxing, Sanda (chinese kick boxing). MMA practitioners normally study styles in all of the three types I mentioned to make them well rounded and able to defend against and beat any type of opponent. The main difference between MMA and Boxing competitions is the rules. With MMA, you can do so much from punching them while they are on the ground (ground and pound) to elbowing them in the face. However, with boxing, this is illegal and you can only punch them. Generally speaking I would say MMA skills won't help you in a boxing match as the rules restrict you. I personally think Floyd Mayweather has a clear advantage because he is a professional boxing and spend 100% of his time boxing whereas Conor McGregor spend equal amounts of time in Striking, Grappling and Ground fights which he cannot utilize in his boxing match. For this reason, his MMA background will actually put him in a disadvantage as he would spend less time in boxing compared to Floyd Mayweather.
