Oh yeah I've been making my own custom skins for a few years now. I'm uber picky about how my board looks so for me there's no other way. Actually in the process of designing a new one now, just a couple issues I got to sort out before adding another skin...
Hope yours turns out well! It's loads of fun to do.
Custom themes really is the only way to go, makes you better like your board more. And it shows you have that creative edge, plus who does not like original work.
Yes, over the recent weeks I have been creating small graphics, webpages/enter pages and just expanding links and what not on to them. Although I have been focusing on YouTube custom themes, as getting the correct size matters as the page can expand pixel size.
custom themes are like bonuses, you shouldn't have one until you've done hard work.
The reason I say this is because people don't come to your site to gawk at the amazing flash banner nor do they come for modal login box. They have come to your site because you have said you site will offer goods or services. And yet all you've done is create a flashy page with none of the content the user was expecting.
They don't come to gawk but they do come and that's what matters. A good looking forum gets more people to look. And if you want to express your creativity with a unique, custom made skin then why not? Even if it isn't dazzling, it'll look like you care about your community down to the last detail. You care enough to go that extra mile and that is what makes a lot of difference to people.
