Buying a domain through wordpress

Would it be worth it to get a host and use wordpress.org and buy a domain through godaddy for my wordpress blog, or just pay the 18$ for a domain through wordpress.com? I'm undecided and was wondering if anyone else has any experience with it.

Personally I would go with using a self-hosted wordpress blog since there are some restrictions on wordpress.com of what you can do (such as modifying some code, upload custom themes which aren't part of their themes database, and uploading plugins).

But if you're on a tight budget and don't want to pay for hosting, then perhaps the second option is what you want.

I never liked the sound of buying domains through your host. I've heard one too many horror stories over the years. Especially ones where the host closes down and you can't take your domain with you to a new host (transfer or whatever that's called). It's better to use something reliable like GoDaddy or NameCheap, because by using a realiable domain host, should you need to switch hosts for whatever reason, you'll be more in control of what you can do with your domain.
