Buying a domain

I was just wondering, can you buy a domain and its yours(meaning you don't have to pay for it anymore) or do you have to pay every year(or when it expires) for one

If you want it for another year you have to pay but if you don't want it when it expires you don't pay anymore 🙂

I'm not sure if you can. You should go for 1 year because your forum might fail and you wont need it forever 🙂

I have never seen a company which offers such a thing, and doing so would be silly. You can buy domains for as many years as you want (10 years should be long enough), but you can't buy them permanently.

My domain host offers upto 10 years, But they also offer a auto renewal for when it runs out.

I think most domain sites you have to renew it after a certain amount of time. It's not one of those one-time pay and it's yours for life. Like others have said, you don't really want it for life anyways, especially since you don't know how far your site's going to go.

It could be considered renting but that's the same as other stuff around the internet.
