It isn't for me since I find I can usually get good search rankings for certain keywords by making a lot of blog posts and forum posts on a certain keyword/topic which have low competitions, but medium to high demand.
Personally, I rather spend my money on a better theme, mods, plug-ins, contests, articles, hiring a web developer/designer, and faster web hosting like a VPS or dedicated web host which will improve my members and website visitors experience.
But, I notice I been getting paid dofollow link advertising requests e-mails from Brochure style websites which do not have a lot of content, and are mainly stores which sell or promote products, so I'm wondering are paid links which pass pagerank/link juice really worth it even though Matt Cutts of Google Web spam team consider them to be spam and manipulative to the natural search rankings.
