First Impressions
[note]========== BEGIN - First Impressions ==========[/note]
BVWebhost Forum gives me a mixed feeling for its first impressions. I actually like the overall view of the design. I like bright themes (although my heart forever lies with dark ones) and the different layout you are brave enough to try. It makes me want to look and read around because I want to know what else the forum has to offer. I will say that is a good impression because the forum is attached to a website and tends to be deserted; this may propel visitors to actually take a good look at the forum. On the other hand, the elements of the forum do not seem to blend together. They are outstanding on their own but do not go well together or somehow makes viewing rather difficult. This can be a great disadvantage against the forum's content. Especially when I noticed there are rooms for media and resources. Although they are currently empty (and I have to admit using the search function at those two sections made me rather confused), I can guess the directions you are aiming, and they definitely need to be supported with a strong technical aspect of the forum.

One minor detail that I also want to address is language. I noticed in forum descriptions and some posts by the administrator that there are some grammatical errors, especially mistakes in punctuations (such as using question mark, comma, or apostrophes) and missing letters (for example at the 'About' footer box). Professionalism is also one impression I get from one quick glance at the forum, so it is quite saddening to see this kind of imperfection. I would like to raise this as subject of improvement, mainly because the power of language is very strong in terms of impression.

As I have mentioned previously, I actually like this bright atmosphere of the theme. It's beautiful and serene. Unfortunately, such image does not match the idea of the forum well. Especially after I visit the main link (the front page for hosting). First off, it is good to have bright themes, but this one feels too bright. The text needs bolder, darker colors to make it easier for reading against bright background. Think carefully of colors especially as the text size decreases, for example at corners of posts or bottom of the index page. Choosing pink as the color when the mouse is over the text or as drop-down menu color for sub-forums matches the beauty of the theme, but does not match the idea of the forum like said above. Images of nature for the header and behind sign-up box feels out of place. An image at the header does not seem to work for me (check spoiler below). The 'About' footer box is also not evenly distributed; it concentrates so much at the left side despite the empty space at the right side. Unless you are planning to put something else there, yes. The post layout also seems to need some tweaking; the texts and right side of the post box are too close to the edge of the page body that in combination they all seem weird. You can browse around other forums which are using XenForo as their software, or even the default theme of XenForo, to hopefully give you clearer idea of what I meant with last few sentences.

When I said that the theme does not match the idea of the forum, it does not mean that the theme is not usable. The keys are images and colors. To make it even more personal and related to the front page, you can at least start the same color scheme and expand from there.

Site Structure

Welcome messages are beautiful, although I suggest not to make them too long because it takes too much attention and time to read the actual content.

BVWebhost Forum's layout looks short and straight to the point at first glance, but when I see that there are eight to twelve sub-forums for each forum, something is off. The idea of having categories, forums, and sub-forums is to show what belongs where while still showing the general topic they all have. In your case, the division takes place way too deep. It takes a tad too long for visitors to find what 'Web Hosting' forum contains, for example. I didn't notice the sub-forum number there right away due to the unique setup of the design. This takes too much time to browse around, wondering what the forum has to offer, feeling confused because one needs too many clicks to be able to see the real content, which may result in visitor leaving. It is unfortunate, given what I have talked about at 'First Impressions' up there.

Therefore I suggest you to take out all sub-forums and turn them into forums instead. You don't need to repeat 'Web Hosting' as category and forum name. You will have quite large numbers of forums by doing this. This is where you need to decide on priorities. Which parts can you condense into one section? Which parts to remove first and expand later when there is bigger audience? For example, I think it is still not too confusing to discuss website script, codes, software, and themes in one forum. There are some options to tackle this confusion without adding one forum for each topic.

Very Poor

Final Remarks
BVWebhost Forum is still new and have lots of rooms for improvement. Most elements have been laid in place and are strong in their own ways. The questions are mostly related to identity of the forum and how all elements match each other to make one great and full impression. I hope the ideas I write above can help improve the forum. Good luck!

Hello All,

Thanks Migi for your review. Your feedback is straight forward and I like it. I will work on it.

The site has been moved to a new location webdiscussions.net.

Here are my thoughts..

I think the two column layout combined with your sidebar makes it hard to read your forum sections - i.e. it feels a little cluttered.

I would suggest experimenting with reverting it back to a single column for the forum sections. Then try displaying your subforums directly below the section instead of using the current dropdown menu system (there should be an option to change this behaviour).

Colours are quite pleasing but as mentioned above needs more contrast to help highlight the sections better.

Also you should add a custom favicon. Best of luck. 🙂

Thanks Optic for the feedback provided. I will try changing the column section.

I edited the new, working link into the OP 🙂

My feedback
  • The beginning background picture looks nice (the flower), though it doesn't really have anything to do with the Internet. Maybe change it to something more like a computer? It would fit a web dissussion forum a lot better than the flower.
  • You have way to many boards right now. I would recommend you to cut down on these. Maybe get rid of the "Real estate" category? It doesn't really make much sense right now.
  • I'm assuming the broken picture in the center is your logo. Though, since it's broken I don't know for sure. If that's your logo, I significantly recommend fixing it. A broken image in the middle of your forum doesn't look very good or professional.

Good luck! 🙂

The first impression that I get when I look on the site is that no way can that be a webmaster forum. It just doesn't have that look. It has flowers and the colour scheme is pink which just gives it more of a general discussion or relaxation vibe.

Maybe also make your logo transparent as it has a white background which is clearly visible.

Design Quality

The design of your forum unfortunately does not give me a great first impression. I am seeing a lot of white on your theme and nothing stands out to make your forum memorable or to show off your brand. The only thought in my head is that you're just another webmaster forum right now because you haven't given me anything design-wise to remember you by. You've got a beach background behind your "sign up now" button, but no related images/backgrounds anywhere else on your theme. It looks like you just found a random image you liked and added it to the button's styling. Your logo does earn you back some 'points' though; it is well-made and although it doesn't do anything extraordinary, I think it works for your forum. Overall though, you've got a lot of work to do to improve your design.

Poor

Stats-icon.png
Site Statistics

At the time of writing this review, you have just over 7,100 posts in 1,150 topics. This seems like a good number, though is quite a bit more posts than topics. I notice a lot of your forum sections only have a handful of topics. For example, in your Web Hosting category, your Web Hosting forum is clearly popular while the others don't seem to be doing too well. The same seems to be a trend across all the forums on your board. While your stats show a lot of content, it seems to be consolidated into a handful of areas. Also, you currently have 285 members on your site. This seems like a good number, though I'd imagine you have quite a few inactive ones given your stats. Work on engaging your members more and finding ways to get them to post. You've got them to join, now get them to engage.

Good

Site Structure

First of all, I really don't like the two-column layout you have going on here. Seeing forums side-by-side in such a plain/bland theme is not making it easy to browse your site and find areas to post in. I can see why you chose this though, since you do have quite a long index and many forums on it. I suggest cutting down on your forum sections, combine some of the less active ones (see above), and then use a more traditional view (or at least give the option for members to switch to it) to see one forum per row/column.

Additionally, your site focus is confusing me. You have categories for web hosting, web discussion and promotion at the top which makes me think (going along with your site name) that you are running a webmaster discussion forum. However, I keep scrolling and see some much more focused and unrelated categories, such as forex trading and real estate. Real estate especially throws me off, especially on a site called "Web Forums." This honestly seems more like a business forum with a very specific "combo focus" but nothing in your branding or presentation gives me that idea other than your forum layout.

I suggest making it more clear what your forum is about and focusing in on that niche.

Poor

Final Remarks
Honestly, I was not overly impressed with much on your forum other than a few of your stats. Your design leaves much to be desired and your site structure is simply confusing. It looks like you've got a lot of ideas, just try to narrow those ideas down and come up with something that works well on a single site.

Re: Web Discussions

Seem's like a good site to me. Your theme is really good too, thats one of the main things I really like about it! 🙂

Re: Web Discussions

Thanks for your feedback Geoffrey, we are currently working on few other things and I am sure we can have this corrected.
@ Korora Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Web Discussions

It looks like you got a new theme? 🙂

Here's my thoughts on your brown theme:

Colors: The colors are fine, if you must have brown. Honestly brown is not a very "appealing" color, I would go with a blue/teal, or if you want to match the logo, a nice really light pink background with a white header, (header where your logo goes) and that will really bring out the colors in your logo, because right now the brown is doing you everything but good. So chuck out the brown and turn the background into a light pink (and I mean light...almost white..), and the navigation bar into a darker pink of the background color, (since it's a darker brown in the navigation bar as it is now...) Keep the white for the content background, though.

I would also change the colors of your green forum folders, something of a light blue maybe?

I would also change the board links into a darker blue of whatever blue you used for the folder icons, that way it gives it some kind of contrast between it. I would also darken up the board descriptions a bit, they are a tad hard to read with the light grey.

It might seem a bit cotton candy, but with the really light pink, (or rather salmon, whatever variation of red you have in your logo) it will make it less cotton candy and more, unique. ^.^

Re: Web Discussions

Um... what happened? Looks like you guys started over again...?

Anyway, not a huge fan of the brown, but nice theme overall. You can change the background, though, and it does set cookies, so that's cool. (with the Stylium thingy)

However, what's with the logo? Why are you using the one from your old theme? It doesn't match with the current one at all and looks way out of place. Same thing with the favicon.

Re: Web Discussions

The theme is OK, but not a fan of the brown.
It would be ok back in the 90's, but not now.

The logo looks old styled as well.
I am not saying old style is bad, its just its too much lol.

I like the way the subforums are set up.

Maybe you should remove RSS feed though. its useless and can easily be hacked.
