Can a forum be closed for copied posts?

I've had this problem pop up with material I wrote for my forum {or other members wrote for it} being lifted and used on a rival forum. I ask them to take it down, and if they don't, I report them to their free host for copyright infringement.

I see copyrighted music's use for listening as very different. They're not posting those songs up claiming they sang them themselves, and that IS what these people were doing with our writing.

Copying a few posts as in what? Tutorials? Images? Or just a few forums games like 'count to 1,000 before 2012'?
In theory, both. If you and I both create a thread on our sites entitled "Count to 1,000" and for the first post include exactly the same text, and the person who posted first can proof the person who posted it second had access to the first copy before they posted, you have a copyright theft case that will hold up in court :shrug:

Yeah, it's corrupt, it's our current system, get over it or join a party that cares to fix it.

True, but the actual posting of numbers and such doesn't fall into copyright. Same with the Lybian flag (Google it, you'll understand why) and the album artwork for The White Album, they aren't original enough to be copyrighted.

Just wondering, can a forum be shut down and closed if it has a few copied posts from another forum?
Nope. Good luck to anyone trying to get that one accomplished.

Sooooo, if someone posts their novel up on their personal forum, to only be shown there as a per-release, and you post it on your site, you haven't committed copyright infringement and you won't be forced to remove it if the host receives a DMCA notice (and you're on USA soil)?

The question is general, which means the answers we give have to take a lot of different things into account, not just the usual things. Clearly the answer to "can they" is yes, but it's highly unlikely in most cases.

Copied posts?

So you copied the well known "What's your all time favourite game?" and then you get a DMCA notice? I doubt that.

I love the creative "what-if's" people come up with on forums. What if flying monkeys dropped fairy dust on me and I turned into a giant strawberry? Then what.. What if a spaghetti monster attacked me and ate off my hands and feet? Then what..
:lol:

Well, posting an entire book and getting a DMCA notice is much more likely than having monkeys fly, dropping fairy dust on you, and turning you into a strawberry. Though with recent innovations in stem cell research it may be the other way around in a few decades.

@dotDavid
Again, though it is doubtful it is not impossible, which is what i'm trying to say.

@theezy
Find me some fairy dust and then i'll read the rest of your post, until then try and make a point using things that are actually possible.

@Kirisute Gomen
Well, that's assuming that things like this don't stop it first;

Alright guess you've got no problem people using crawlers to mass copy posts on your board to theres then 😛.

It doesn't show that he doesn't care about his forum. It shows that he trusts his members to know the difference. When your forum has loyal members, it doesn't matter if people copy you; the members will know the difference.

It's not about the members. It's about the site and its content. Having another site with the exact same content devalues both sites as a whole. I personally wouldn't want my forum being whored out by having other people copy its content for nothing in return.

Snobo is right.
Also Ive had my share of copiers in previous forums. Sitting at the computer furious and trying to do whatever I can to stop the person from doing what they did or trying to get them take down whatever they copied.
I stopped caring and its not worth the effort.
The members will know the real forum. They wont go running off to the next one because it has the same posts. If anything, that will deter people from wanting to join that forum.

Who said it's only about the current members? Have you taken into account future potential members? New members that have never seen your forum before or know it even exists?

While I am inclined to agree with Shotgun, there isn't much on wober worth copying. It's just a general chat forum, so copying somebody's life experiances or whatnot isn't really worth it. If theezy ran a graphics or PHP script site, more people would steal the content.

Well I don't know that I agree with that last bit... as Bitcove is launching a General Discussion forum extremely soon (working out bugs and filling forums now). However, being as it will be the center of our network, our torrent script development among other community projects will all be located on this single forum, making it be larger than several smaller forums spread around the web. The point i'm trying to make is simple, every board can have content that is valuable, even just another general discussion community :great:

For some of the part I agree with everyone.

Indeed. 😀
