Pardon my ignorance for this thread. How much can a moderator earn? Can being moderator of several sites provide a livelihood? I am asking about it because I had several invitations to be a moderator. I am not even sure if those sites would pay the moderator but I am assuming that there is a sort of honorarium for the moderator since they are spending time on the website. Am I right on this assumption? And if so, how much can a moderator earn in a month of doing moderator job?

It could be one depending on the cost of living in your local area. However, with a high cost of living, you'd have to secure possibly a thousand of them to make any money - and it's difficult to find that much work. Note, the same thing is true with writing jobs where there simply isn't enough work for skilled writers - or at least the employers cannot be convinced that certain people can write - when they can.

Most cases, no. You can follow the community management route and work for a company like Jagex (Jagex Career Page) and make a decent living. However, the chances of you getting paid to moderate especially with forums advertised here are extremely slim to none.

I agree with @Matthew here. For the typical moderation job, you aren't going to get paid, or not going to get paid much from the forum you are moderating; unless you work for a company that has a community moderator position for company websites open for hiring.

I think most moderator jobs should be paid, but then again, there is the argument that some of them can be used on a resume. In that case, you're sort of getting paid.

Most significant forums don't even make enough to contribute a living wage to the owner, let alone support breaking that income down to do so for the staff as well.

I'm in complete support of paying staff, if it can be afforded.

Thank you to those who responded to this thread. I have posted this because there are 2 sites that are inviting me for a moderator job. I could have asked if there is pay but that may sound preposterous or assuming. I have asked around for the function of a moderator and I don't think it's easy to monitor the posts on the boards of the forum. Besides, you have to be discerning on the content if it is a spam or a flame or any other unwanted post. Maybe I will just decline. Thanks again and I really appreciate your comments.

Hello Corzhens I have PM'ed you.

Honestly, I've been a moderator on two big boards. I'm talking about forums that are bigger than FP itself. One of them I was eventually an administrator on. I didn't get paid for it, or well, at least they promised payment in cookies that I never recieved XD. I did it purely because I enjoyed the communities. Forums generally don't bring in much money, even the "successful" ones. It also depends on the niche.

Some of the large sites out there will employ social media managers and the like because they are going in a big way and probably provide a service or product. You would probably make a pretty decent living wage off that, but actually securing a job like that is difficult. There will be so many people vying for that same position. XD.
