Can posting certain topics increase traffic?

Like say you have a gaming forum and you keep yourself updated to lastest news and stuff..

Or if you write reviews of recent games...

Do you believe posting topics like that could increase traffic(even help SEO?)?

I have found this method to be very helpful in getting traffic to my forum. Say for example, the developers for the most popular game on Xbox 360 have a title update for there game. People get online to play and right away get a title update to download. They are curious to know what it was that updated in the game, so they google it. If I'm quick enough to find the news at that time, I post a thread about it and get a bunch of traffic. For that, I put the date in the title because there's just so many updates that people narrow there searches that way. I've gotten thousands of hits from threads like that.

I also have a team of members who post the latest news in gaming for me which help bring traffic to the forums. So it definitely works. However, not all stories will work all the time. It depends how good the post is and how much interest it might have.
