The common staple of a big board and large companies. Many messages made by moderators / representatives are largely templates which are tweaked to specific situations or sometimes not tweaked at all.
The upsides is that you don't need to type the exact thing up every five minutes whenever a situation comes up over and over again, but it can also be deeply impersonal, as you know that someone is slapping you with a template, and that only a small portion of the message, if any is actually original.
It also leads to some very weird situations, particularly when coupled with moderator tools.
For instance, on MyBB, someone might make a thread titled "wheres 2.0?!" in a forum to requesting features and they might get the usual "it'll come when it comes" response followed by a canned response along the lines of... "Thank you posting blahblah blah, your feature has unfortunately been declined, blahblahblah".
