You need a new theme for sure. And get rid of the chatbox as well, it turns people away and looks unprofessional. You really should have some information on what the forum is about and such, there's just too much going on to tell.
I do not agree with the above, you will get various perspectives on chat boxes. I for one like them, yes you will get chat surfers i.e. members that just chat but that is also activity. I have not seen how yours is laid out, I am speaking in general. I'll take a look at your site later.
Be cautious of the overzealous person that states do this and do that. When I see such comments first thing I do is look at their board and often those type of folks are not doing so hot themselves. Not the case with the comment above but understand everyone has a perspective, in the end you set the tone for your board. It's not the suggestions themselves but more so how people present them.
Things to consider:
1. Genre of the board - What makes your board different or is it just another gaming, promo, chat site etc.
2. Theme/Style - Look is important, eye catching but not to flashy
3. Ads - If you have them, placement is key so as not to distract from your board
4. Content - If your topics are the same as most boards, it's not going to do well. Come up with something unique.
5. I also agree with the comment regarding the register block. If that is right in my face I leave, I want to see the content then decide.
6. Solid Staff - you need people you can trust, it's best to do it yourself until you can find people you know will do a great job and be part of your board.
7. Chat - I like chat boxes others do not.
8. Stats, do not harp on them, just have fun with the board. Advertise it and enjoy it. I saw this here, "I would rather have 10 active members than 300 members with only 10 active" Very true, Lots of boards have over a 1,000 members and they brag about it, go look and not even 1% are active.
9. Do not over do mods, focus on content.
The above are only a few things to consider. Ask yourself why start a board, would I be better as a staff or member on one I like. Many start boards, 90% die off in less than 6 months. That's 90% and that means only 10% ever make it past 6 months yet alone a year.
