I don't want to just throw a random list of categories on this directory site I'm working on. I want to list categories that are actually applicable to the most popular genres/niches out there. Here is what I have so far:
I was thinking those could fall under "Entertainment" I suppose I can branch out and list those specifically if I gain a great number of advertisements for those categories.

I would not forget Webmaster and Horror forums. Those are quite popular. ^.^
Webmaster would fall under "Promotion/Hosting" I think but I suppose a Webmaster Resource area might be a good section if I get many advertisements in that niche. I don't know about Horror Forums. I can only think of one from the top of my head that is specifically for that niche. Everything else I imagine would fall under Zimm's idea with TV/Movies

Real Estate is another important category that you can place on your directory website.
In my humble opinion - start general at first. That way you can fill up your categories quickly and it will look like you have some quality content within those forums.
As the site then grows, add more and then at that point you can make them more "specialized."
