I was surprised to know that our new laptop has no cd drive. It escaped my scrutiny of the quotation maybe because I was assuming that the cd drive is a standard device. The vendor said that installers are shifting to usb and soon the cd will be gone. Is that really true?

Yes, it is true. Optical media is becoming obsolete. Even many desktop computers are being built without optical drives.

It might be reasonable in a way though. Everything that a CD drive needs to do can be done by a USB port. The goal is that technology must get smaller and smaller.
