I'm curious about something, how much work is involved changing a forum name? Lets say there is a forum up for three years but wants to change it's name and link, what would that do to it's SEO and all the work that forum did into building up back links and stuff?

If the old name is doing well in search engines its success will usually continue with the new name.

If you are changing domains, then on the old domain you want to do a http 301 permanent redirect. This way you do not hopefully lose any of the link juice/page rank etc.

As long as you do a redirect like the above has said, your SEO will be fine. Any SEO work you have done for the old link will eventually move on to your new link.

And with redirects, make sure you limit your redirects to a max of 2-3 redirects. Any more and Google may not pass your SEO to the new domain.

Would you get penalized by Google and other search engine if you buy a lot of domain names to redirect to your new domain to protect your brand, copyright, and image from competitors?

I know that Joomla.org also owns Joomla.con, Joomla.net, and possibly other Joomla related domains.

I heard it is recommend to use 301 redirects for permanent name changes.
