Can this be harmful if your site is already fairly 'established'?

If your redirect the old domain to the new domain, you shouldn't lose many members however due to SEO purposes it could do some damage (i'm not an expert but believe it would do a bit). However if you are sure that you need the new name or domain then there shouldn't be much harm in doing so.

Changing your domain name shouldn't have too much of an impact (if any) towards SEO as long as you properly redirect your old links to your new domain.

You can achieve this with 301 permanent redirects from the old page location to the new page location of your site and by telling Google through Webmaster Tools using change of address that you've moved so that they could update their index to reflect your new URL. It's not really an instantaneous method but it's the most recommended and it works as time passes on. You'll likely get penalised for duplicate content otherwise.

If you have concerns for your frequent visitors, you don't need to worry as they will get redirected to the new domain name. It might cause confusion at first but they'll get used to it.

I don't think I've ever done this before, so I don't know how it would impact your reputation or your site's. I do, however, think that as long as you let your members know that a name/domain change is on the way so they aren't caught off guard by thinking you're starting over, then you could be just fine.

I don't think changing your site's name or domain is a problem as long as your regular visitors are aware of the change. If you have put a lot of work into getting your site's name out there and have spent money on custom graphics and stuff like that, changing your site name can be costly though.
