Do you like having a chat box on your communities?

I recently removed a chat box from my forum because I believe it takes away from discussions. I am considering adding it back.

I don't have the chatbox activated on my forum because I thought it would take away discussions from my forum.

If a forum becomes active and can thrive, then you're probably okay to have a chatbox anyway. But if you're a new forum, then it could hurt the forum by having it.

Chatboxes are unnecessary... for the reasons already stated above.

I think chatboxes worked on Roleplaying forums but these days I think they're a bit outdated. On any other forum they'll take away activity, and on roleplaying forums most use Discord instead of a chatbox.

The one benefit from having a chatbox was it increased the daily activity on my site. I got members that normally don't participate on the forum that were getting involved in the chat. It was useful to offer fast support to my members if there were any issues or concerns with our partnered sites(downtime, updates). I did notice a decline in actual posts on the forum though.

It was a trend back in the day, wasn't it 🙂 However, as time goes on, we get fewer members, and they all go over to Facebook pages. I don't dislike it, however, I'm never that active with chatboxes based on the time zones and based on how many members are online,

Not to mention that what I do like about it is that it sends feeds when new topics or replies appear 😉

But now days I don't want it, as a member or owner it's POINTLESS to say that it takes away what you got going on a very little amount of members

I don't mind having a chat box or seeing one as long as it is not used so much, it takes away from the main focus of the forum. I like to see chat boxes that are used for small messages such as saying good morning.

No, I don't like them or use them if they are there.

While they're convenient for quick fired chit-chat. I personally feel like they take away the entire purpose of a forum.

I think so too. All the general banter and community discussions will all float into the shout box. It's like having a full blown discord on your community. Which I don't think is beneficial at all. It may work for some forums, but I don't see the point of having one at all. You lose daily activity and the community foundation on the forum itself. If users are chatting more on the shoutbox instead of the main forum itself, it is highly likely that they won't post on the main forum whatsoever.

Which is a major issue right there, as your forum is now being isolated by the shoutbox.

Used to be against. Still against for certain niche forums.

However, my Off Topic Forum is a general forum, and I've added a chat box to it for small talk. That's what it's used for and no one is neglecting the forum otherwise.

Back in the day I would see a lot of chatter about getting a chatbot on your forums. We had devs create different chatbot plugins and even folks from Arrowchat.

I think these days the idea of a chatbot isn't prevalent as it once was and that's perfectly fine. Having to focus on getting people into and joining in on the discussions of our forums are more important than aa chatbot.

These are big no no for me, however, I have it on one of my forums, as some people like it.
