Cheap Desktop or Laptop?

Come on guys, you just don't get it. He/she doesn't need to game nor needs windows at all. Any old PC/Laptop is good for his use of Linux. So go with those 2 cheap ones or the First Lenovo. Hint: I know Lenovo is good I have one. I'm also a Guru on there helpful Forum.

So please stop pestering him about a windows or gaming PC. He Doesn;t want it.

Yeah, Lenovo is a great brand. The one I linked is pretty awesome for the price if you ask me.

Actually ubuntu needs RAM, like windows. I'd suggest you go debian or slackware incase you buy a simple laptop with about 512 or 1gb of ram. All you need is just a 20gb of harddrive and just about 1gb swap partition.

I got an HP Laptop with 320 Gig Hardrive and 4 GB RAM for only 350$

It's around 400 $ now but it's still a good price. HP Laptops are priced well, look into them.

I agree all computer operating systems including Ubuntu needs RAM. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a computer with 1GB DDR2 RAM, and it is good enough for me to do most of my daily tasks like forums, e-mail, web browsing, multimedia playback, and basic video editing.

The minimum system requirements for RAM for Ubuntu 11.04 is 384 MB, but I recommend 512-1GB or more of RAM.

By switching to LXDE/Lubuntu or Xubuntu instead of the default GNOME desktop and turning off Bluetooth, and all the other services you don't use by going to start up applications and unchecking them, you can use even less RAM.

I'm actually just using 278.9MB of RAM running LXDE desktop environment with Ubuntu 10.04 and having Firefox 6 open. I also turned off start up apps I don't need like Bluetooth.

Why do you want such less RAM, even if it is just Ubuntu. You won't be able to do much things.

You can never go wrong with a cheap desktop, I just would prefer one of those. I highly suggest you use Windows on every new computer, because Windows is the best operating system brand yet and for a long, long, long, time. Do that and then you will have the perfect computer un-boxing right in the palm of your hands. Good luck considering your computer!

1GB was what my computer came with back in 2007, and I'm saving up for a newer computer when my old computer breaks. But, so far, my current computer is good enough for most of the task I do with it like web browsing, listening to music, and watching videos, so I never found a real need to upgrade to 2GB-4GB for Linux.

You can try asking people if they have free desktop computer they do not need anymore, or volunteer/work in exchange for a free computer. You can also try looking on Craigslist, Ebay, and Amazon Marketplace for cheap computers.

I got my first used Ubuntu Linux based desktop by volunteering 24 hours.

Free Geek is a non-profit organization which gives a way free "used" computers pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux, but you have to volunteer at FreeGeek for 24 hours of volunteering, and they are only in a few cities in the US and Canada according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Geek

In addition to Portland, a number of other cities have started their own Free Geek organizations.[5]
Portland, OR ("the Mothership")
Fayetteville, AR
Central FL
Chicago, IL
Columbus, OH
South Bend, IN (Michiana)
Vancouver, BC (Canada)
Seattle, WA
Murfreesboro, TN (Born Again—no longer recycling)
Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN (Twin Cities)
Toronto, ON (Canada)
Providence, RI
Ferndale, MI (Greater Detroit area)
[edit]

This is how I got my first Ubuntu Linux based desktop by volunteering 24 hours at FreeGeek doing varies tasks like cleaning, fixing computers, taking apart computers, house work.

Dang I wish one was near me. I would love to get a free computer, but I would ofcourse replace ubuntu with Opensuse or PCBSD.

FreeGeek thrift store are also pretty good at buying inexpensive used computer parts, accessories, video games, DVD players, flat panel TVs, Tube monitors, and computers.

I believe workers and volunteers get a 20% or higher discount off all items.

Thank you.

I am aware that ubuntu requires some ram. I ran it on my old desktop, but had to give it to my dad when his laptop broke. I had 2 computers (my desktop with ubuntu and laptop with Win7), so he just took my desktop and installed Win7 as well.

I am now interested in getting another desktop for ubuntu - and I don't have a bunch to spend. I currently have $100, and I plan to be buying this around Christmas as I will have enough money saved up by then to get a decently-priced one, that will run ubuntu.

I'm not going to need to do anything crazy like gaming all day with 600 FPS, or making the world's best animation. This is more for doing daily tasks I do such as browse forums, code, and design. 🙂.

That would make sense, but Windows is superior in every way, considering it's the best brand. The way you put it makes it sound as if he hadn't wanted to run his system with a better operating system.

I'm just warning you, a cheap Windows desktop can never let you down. 😉

But that is true, I don't, haha! I already have windows on my laptop, but now I am looking to run ubuntu on a desktop. Ubuntu has all I need - plus a few coding tools that seem helpful, and it will run faster then my slower laptop now. 🙂.

Okie-doke then. I just wanted to make sure you made a good choice. 🙂

Go for a cheap asus laptop, can get them for next to nothing and it won't have terrible specs.
