Christianity Haven converted to Xenforo!

MAde it over at long last, did it went well with no errors? Are you happy and so does the community

I kind of thought you will migrate to IPB. I wonder what made you want to choose Xenforo over IPB?

We had an old version of vBulletin and needed to upgrade for security reasons and chose not to go to vBulletin 5 for a few reasons. One was because so many people were leaving that software for support that we didn't want to do a big upgrade and then get stuck there.

We looked at free software but had some concerns with each one.

When we looked at Xenforo (which we swore we'd never turn to when we first began the forum), we saw how maintained it was with support and knew it would be around a long time. Plus, of all the choices it was the most professional. I kind of look at it as you don't use a free hotmail email if you want to look professional so why would we use a free software if we want to be taken seriously as a contender in the top Christian forum sites. I know we're still small but all our decisions have to be based on what's best not for our current standings but for the future as well.

There are some glitches we're taking care of but so far the conversion seems to have gone over really well. I had my crash course of learning permissions yesterday so that was wild. 😀

It's awesome to see Christianity Haven move away from the old and nasty vBulletin. 😛

I'm really proud of you guys. The forum looks great.

Old and nasty??? LOL I thought we looked nostalgic 😀

Do share your experience with Xenforo as an admin. 🙂

My job once everything was imported by the owner was to work on permissions and that was a struggle since my mindset was stuck on vBulletin and this was somewhat different. I thought it would be tons easier with one step but just like vbulletin you have to do multiple permissions steps, it's the same with Xenforo as well...just not as bad.

I didn't realize that permissions for the forums would be gone even though they said Inherited. So I had to do that immediately after we went live and realized no one could post. D'OH! Then once I had reworked the Registered permissions I saw that the other user group permissions had changed and had to go back and redo those as well. So that was stressful but I think I have things good and like they should be.

Training my mods to use the tools is much easier than on vBulletin! One of my mods is older and not as tech savvy as the other mod but the other mod solely uses a cell phone so that's always a challenge to figure out how to tell them to do something. We use Tapatalk and that's limited and the reason we keep Tapatalk is because we get new members through it so it's worth it.

I've always had a love for organizing things and so starting over like this has put me in such a good mood figuring things out and reworking things. It's taking up a lot of my time though and I have to force myself to get up and get my 10,000 steps a day in!

The glitches we've encountered is sending out emails didn't work (fixed now) which also meant that email confirmations weren't going through and people resetting passwords or changing emails (even though I told them to update their emails BEFORE the migration) were forcing a lockout. Our Account Upgrade for supporting members isn't working and I'm hoping the owner figures that one out because I have no idea what's up with that. We're broke after the upgrade and could use a few handouts. Another weird thing I noticed is when I look at the member's posts they aren't all listed. One member has 101 posts and only 3 show. Anyone know what's up with that?

All in all the experience of the migration if I had to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the absolutely most amazing thing would be a 7. Maybe pushing to 8. I'm far happier with the look than I thought it would be and the import turned out well too for the most part.

Looks great. VB was the daddy back in the day but Xen is amazing now!
