The guitarist is my classmate. Anyway, that's gotta be like winning the lottery. Well, I confess. I had little faith in that band. 🙁

It's really difficult for bands to make money just by music these days. They have to tour and sell expensive tickets and merchandise.

How would it compare to the pre-internet era you think?

Pre-internet bands had to play underground gigs, tiny venues and try to get seen by a record label executive in order to even have a shot at getting signed. They might get lucky and be heard through a competition or as an opening act for a larger band, but it was a real grind to make it happen. Now, executives can find talent at the click of a button, bands can publish music in seconds, and can find success without the backing of a label. It's easier in that respect and also more difficult as the number of talented people or groups out there getting exposure for their talents is substantial!

Well done to your classmate for getting signed! Hopefully it is a step towards notoriety andaling a living as a musician.

Getting seen is easier but making money is more difficult. Bands used to make money off selling CDs, touring and selling their merchandise. Who buys CDs anymore? I think it's been 15 years since I bought one and I don't buy music off iTunes.

I think no matter what that it's difficult for bands to "make it". I know a lot of talented people in bands, some have records out, but no one really made it big. Their music is awesome!

Ads on YouTube are one way. Everyone goes there to see for free, but it's not really free, tongue in cheek.

If it was a dream they had, I give them Kudos for following their dream & doing what they can. I wish them the best!

This is amazing to see. All too often you see people in school or college who have a dream of something they want to do and give it up too easily. It's great that your classmate is following his dreams and doing what he enjoys!

A better question is “why would he be able to force me to sign an NDA“. He can’t. You have no obligation to sign anything he gives you.

Pre-internet bands had to play underground gigs, tiny venues and try to get seen by a record label executive in order to even have a shot at getting signed.
In addition we had to drive for hours between venues in unroadworthy transit vans, sleep in the worst hotels imaginable, pay to play and when we did get a contract most of the money was stolen by our managers and accountants.

I have friends and acquaintances who have been household names, made chart topping music and are still living in poverty. It was particularly bad during the 60's/70's and to some extent nothing has changed.

One of the most popular artists in terms of streaming, RAYE, couldn't get a release even though she was contracted to a major label.

This is not a genre that I find easy to get into but within a minute of hearing her perform live the level of talent was obvious.

I wish them luck, it's a tough industry to survive in and contrary to what some might think, it's a hard life even if you make it.
