About a year ago, a client hired me to do SEO on his new website (he'd purchased the site off eBay). The site was not new. At first, it was hard to understand why a four year old site could rank so poorly in Google search ANY keywords. But when I ran a backlink check, I found the site was linked from many spammy link farms and directories. To make it worse, the site had nearly ALL duplicate content copied/pasted from other virtually duplicate sites the person had sold numerous times on Ebay. Disavowing the bad links helped. But, I was able to fix most of the problem by taking down the copied content and adding many new pages of original content as well as interlinking the pages with a more sensible structure. After getting a backlink from the Google+ page (that i'd set up for the site), and a few other credible blog posts made offsite backlinking to it, I noticed the site started popping up very quickly in Google search for the pages being targeted.
