Re: The Importance of Forums

Very nice article. But, regardless of how useful and versatile and knowledge-bearing they are, they are only as valuable as people think. It means nothing if the majority aren't interested in seeking them out and using them of their own accord. The only cure for this is tweaking a forum such that it makes people want to seek it out, join and stay.

One question is, before social networks came out, how much of forum usage was people using them as social networks? I'm guessing it was quite a bit. If that was people's primary reason for using them, forums are out of luck.

It's been many years now since social networks became front and centre though and forums remain, so I don't think they're going to die out as a result of them.

Re: The Importance of Forums

Forums are transforming, look at IPB, XenForo and vbulletin. They are integrating heavily into the realm of social media, with Twitter and Facebook connect, direct news feed publishing and more. Forums, if anything, will become more active through the exploitation of the available social networks, which of course bases itself on whether or not the administrator of that particular forum knows what he's doing, and has a good foundation.
