Closing AdminWeb

AdminWeb was never about making money. It helped me learn new things.
You can make money from forums, but you need a niche that grows the board without issue. Admin sites are ok, great... problem is, its very saturated. You don't technically make money off admin sites. Sites like this? Passion projects.
The main issue is compatibility with shared hosting. Investing too much money and being academic in nature is something I do not want to do.

I agree. It is not about AW not making money. I use a hosted solution now. I cannot optimise anything. Have a footer link and cannot even use attachments.
That's why you're supposed to put the best forum software choice in the checkbox.

A good software makes your life easier.
A bad software makes your life harder either in the short term or the long term. In your case its the long term.

I don't know why you use free forums. 90% of the time its restrictive. There is a reason why paid forums are more successful.

Let me put it this way; the reason why hosts "supported" vBulletin in the vB3 line, its not just because it was popular, its because many coders supported vBulletin to the point of sharing ideas on how to optimize the code to work with all environments including shared hosting.

The same is similar with xenForo. Although not to the same scale. You, the admin know what's supported, and what's not, like requires MySQL, requires PHP, etc.

@Carlos X

Discourse and Flarum have a lot of features for free that even XF does not provide.

1. PWA for free - a critical SEO requirement
2. I lost count, there are so many of them, all free

But the catch is we need to invest and maintain a VPS for best results.

I was a Flarum team member for almost a year. So I chose Flarum even though Discourse is a wonderful software, old enough, proven and time tested. I also thought Discourse is Ruby on Rails which I need to learn, so went the Flarum which is PHP.

I really adore the kind of home page Flarum provides. Flarum is shared hosting compatible. But the team decided not to provide a official web installer, not sure why.

I agree. I use it as a platform to help and learn.

I agree. The only catch for me, it is 15k of my money to pay for XF. And it is just like 15k USD to you 🙂

I never use AdminWeb, but hate to see your forum go.

I have successfully moved the posts and users to MyBB. I am happy with my MySQL skills this time. But I need to find some way to convert the HTML to BBcode. Looking for ways to do that. If it happens, I might keep it running. Hard for me to let all the hard work go.

Discourse is TRASH. I'm sorry, the way the forum listing is, hurts my brain. I just can't. I get migrains every single time I see a site running it. I bounce before I see anything else.

I'm not too familiar with Flarum, but I know it's restrictive. Not just from your post, but I seen sites on it, seen the feedback, etc. Good, but also not great. To me "good" is "ok," nothing to write home about.

xenForo has it out of the box once you buy it. But, YOUR point is that its free.

Yup.

Ruby on Rails is nice, but not widely supported. I only seen a few sites on it. Most of the time, its a CMS. Giant Bomb for example is Ruby. Heavily modified.

Because they probably don't have the resources to code it as such. Its one of the reasons why I opted NOT to use it. I was looking at Flarum. I saw the installation manual "What ...the ...hell? No installation menu? How are we supposed to know its installed or whatever??" Threw me for a loop. I'm currently having a mini headache thinking about it. So stupid.

That's not true. $150.00 for software, $55 for renewals. Server costs is actually pretty low $1,500 a year. 15k? Get outta here. I guess your currency is different.

It is hard when your currency is not USD. 15K is hard no matter which country / currency are you with.

Because they probably don't have the resources to code it as such.

As far as I know, it is simple. They even took down a few third-party installers in the name of security.

I have no intention to turn this into a war thread. Take a look at free plugins from Flarum. This is only an incomplete list, all free

Do what is best for you. I am feeling this same way about Discussion Block despite it being on XenForo. All the good add-ons and themes cost money which I am unable to purchase. 🙁

Yeah XF is quite challenging..I would love the Media Gallery for XF but the price 🙁

I have the media gallery from xF it's not great at all, I have Bob's add-ons for that stuff when I had a site.
I'm thinking I may build a new one soon, hehe
Open close open close 🙂

And your point?

Well, I think that's the (other) problem, the more plugins you have installed, the more overhead your server would need to handle. Furthermore if you disabled the plugins, and you left the files in the backend (FTP).... Then that overhead is getting bloated. Trim the fat.

If you don't believe me, here.. go to TAZ, and get grilled. Or I can tag @zappaDPJ.

I disagree here, If you have a good server and most do the amount of space a ram it takes to run them is nothing, I had over 100 Xenforo apps all live on my sites which never affected the site performance a bit, my loading speeds were still A+

Yep, pretty much sadly. TAZ is toxic and is not the forum I'd ever go to. I recalled years ago being a review team member and loving it then. Now it's just a corpo sellout nowadays

I managed to convert the content into BBCode. Sadly, not sure how to put it back into the MySQL column.
