College?

What does everyone think about college, is it seriously something that you need to have a good life?

For me, I don't see myself going to college. I don't learn with having a text book and being told to read all these pages of material; it's not how I learn. I would learn so much better if they just throw me into the position. 😛 So with my coming up on my senior year of high school, everyone is wondering what college I want to go to, and I haven't really told them I'd much rather stay home and work my way up in my job rather than get a college degree that may or may not actually help me. 😛 (That, and I really have no idea what I want to do, nor does any kind of major seem interesting.)

So is college something that is necessary nowadays?

If you have no idea what you want to do then I would highly encourage going to college even if it's just to cover your basic classes. Unless you have contacts that can vouch for you in any companies it is extremely difficult to get hired with no degree and no experience.

It's true that not everyone needs to go to college to be successful however usually the successful people had a plan for quitting school. If you read biographies of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, etc you will see that they in fact dropped out of school however they didn't do it because they didn't know what they wanted to do. You'll be amazed what doors open up for you when you go to college. If anything you make contacts and build relationships with people who may be able to help you get a leg up.

In my field, yes, college is required... to an extent.

To be in aviation, you really don't need a degree just to fly. However, to get a job as an airline pilot, a college degree is required. Many people get the licenses and don't realize that you also need an education.

The catch is, you can have a degree in anything you want; it just needs to be a degree.

I wouldn't say college is exactly necessary , but this day in age, you probably do want to go to college. Like Sharon had touched on,nit will help you find what you want to do.

As for me, I plan on getting a 4 year degree in nursing. Then I'm going to advance my degree and become a CRNA. THEN, I will be going off to medical school to study Anestheisiology. That's 15 years of college for me! Lol.

My parents always want me to go to college because for them, it's just a right thing to do. But actually, I think going out and taking many different jobs will help us learn more than just sitting and looking at boring text books 🙂 Except doctor, they really need education and practice before they come out and cure someone 🙂)

Exactly. 😀 I could learn so much more if they throw me into the position, that's how I learn. I don't learn with textbooks, despite the fact I have been somewhat doing that since I started high school. 😛

I'm ready to go to college, but I still have a few years until I can go. I know it's going to be pretty hard especially because I want to go to nursing school. I know if I put 100% into it, I can do it though. 🙂

Surely there is something that you are passionate about and wouldn't mind spending your days doing it? Making money would then be just a bonus.

I don't think college is necessary for everything that makes life good. It's definitely possible to live well without going to college. I do, though, think that going to college can broaden your horizons, better your chances on many things and add more options in life. I'm going, and I'm going to make sure my kiddos go to college if I ever have children.

College learning isn't really about reading books anyway. Going to college makes it easier for you to meet all kinds of people in various trades (in the future anyway), and you never know who you'll ever need to know in your job. Some degrees also offer, or even requires, some kinds of hands-on training/internship, which you might not get access to unless you're enrolled in an institution. I've heard an opinion that I think I can agree on, that what makes high education important isn't all about what you learn and memorize, but the thinking process you unconsciously do over and over, which is required to get through the courses. I'm not yet done with college and I haven't done my free fall into the job market, though, so I guess I don't have any experience to back my opinions up.

It's w lot of math for sure and I need to know a lot of medical related things for the job because their life is in my hands. Fun fact, there are waivers that are signed before surgeries that state of a patient does during surgery due to anesthesia it isn't the anesthesiologists fault. I think it's a dumb rule but whatever.

That's so troublesome. I thought at worst you'd only need to go for a biology prep course for a couple years or something. Good luck anyway.

Nothing that I am willing to waste 4 years of my life taking classes that have nothing to do with what I am interested in and going into debt while doing so despite the number of scholarships, no. 😛

That's actually quite interesting. Is there a particular reason why you took an interest in special education?

Honestly we were told we had to pick either ESL or Special Education, just having a general degree wouldn't get us a job. But not I've discovered we can't get a job without ESL now either. The only thing I can say with the college is that I have had a few opportunities to be around more special education children. But I have not been trained nor taught how to teach children in special education and I'm about to graduate. So - it's kind of frustrating from my standpoint.
