Im running into a small simple little drama at the moment regarding a couple domain names.

The domain name i really want already has a .com associated with it, well...technically its a premium domain name for $3000. I can get the .NET version of it though for standard price.

Or i can go with my alternative name - what is just the domain name switched back to front and i can get the .COM and or .NET version of it.

Having a .NET downgrades your site or whatnot by any means or has any disadvantages? Because the .COM has nothing there, the name itself is not being used but only being sold.

Whilst the alternative of course doesn't have anything associated with it because they both available.

Thanks!

In terms of search engines and rankings, a .com and a .net are equal. However, .coms are more popular and when people think of a site that is what they think of. Buying the .net version may lower how many people can remember the site name.

Personally I would avoid the .net and just buy the .com. Then when the site is popular and running, buy the premium .com site.

I would prefer to go for the .COM compared to .NET . They are usually popular and considered the top level domain extension in search engines.

I would prefer .COM since most browsers default to .com when you hit CTRL+ENTER.

try google[CTRL+ENTER] , you will end up with google.com

Seems to be easier to just type .com instead of holding control and pressing enter. But that's just me.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Think i will end up going with the .COM alternative even though its only a slight variation to the one i originally wanted. Not a big change. IF im lucky the one i want will expire and they wont renew it so i will grab it at normal price haha. Was lucky with previous ones.'

The truth is that these are SEO myths that still linger around. Whether you choose a .COM, .NET or .ORG, the results will be the same, if your website isn't optimized well.

I've learned over the years with optimizing people's websites, that it really is based on having a brandable domain name. And yes, many people do associate .COM with websites, but that doesn't mean that your website is less important just because it has a different extension. Any domain extension can rank high, if you know what you are doing.

I agree with this. It's really not much of a shortcut.

Besides, if you really don't know what the full URL of it is you'd probably end up Googling what you are looking for anyway to see what shows up in the results. Or, ya know, going through .com, .net, etc. until something pops up that actually works.

There are some places that'll get both domains and make one link to the main site or some places that just buy multiple URLs. Like how Google has several different URLs that all take you to Google. Gaia has several URLs all linking to the same site as well.

So it really depends on what you go for.

Personally, I chose .NET for my domain because I like how it looks better. People still find my site just as much as they would with .COM. Though, I do also have a .COM still lingering from my old host, but that page just goes "SITE MOVED TO X" instead. That was years ago.

I mean, either way? As tinyb said, it doesn't really matter too much. Sure, people will assume .COM first, but most people nowadays know of various types, so it's not really limiting.

.Com is a lot better because almost all business uses a .com domain. It's easier for people to remember too and just more popular.

I'd go for a .COM, read this post on the Forum Promotion blog for a bit of justification. 😉

I used to think that .com is awesome. But actually, .com domains donot offer great choices when we are specific of the domain title.

It is either taken or too costly. So for now, I would go for a .net domain.

I completely agree with Saru on this one. Most of the .coms that AREN'T taken are "Premium", and cost more. I'd go with the .net as well.

I pay $10 a year for my .com domain. It's not that expensive.

OP is talking about a domain that has already been registered, and is now being sold for a "premium" price.

Generally speaking a .com is better, however if it's a good domain name then I think you should go for the .net. FP uses a .net domain and yet it's still very active.
