Combos with gray are cool

Gray is a really versatile color; it pairs well with most other colors. But the trick—and this is actually something a lot of people don't realize—is that natural gray can be tinted blue or green. If you try to match a blue-tinted gray with green, the colors will feel off, and vice-versa. Blue- and green-tinted grays do not match each other either, so those shouldn't be paired.

Digitally, gray is much easier to match. A common design trick is to take a square of the dominant palette color and overlay it on top of gray, then reduce the opacity of the colored square down to 5-10%. This will create a tinted gray that matches the rest of the palette! It's not consciously noticeable for most people, but it makes a color palette feel much more cohesive.

Is gray easier on the eyes when looking at say a forum for extended periods of time? (I don't have the answer)

I have had members of my site want different styles created with some crazy colors. But it doesn't work with the logo so I refuse. Then they resort to changing their text to a color that's not even readable by the community. Why?

It's very subjective - but, unfortunately, some colors are too irritating, as in eye strain or something, to users - so cannot even be considered - whether I want them or the members. Anyway, I wouldn't bow down, generally, too much to what the public wants. Your creation should look like you want it.
