What would you consider the most common and important MODs for a forum, any software?

I would say mods such as automatic image resizing, topic prefixes(sometimes), SEO, and other mods to improve the quality of a forum.

This list covers them for phpbb: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=77320
As for Xenforo...you really don't need any mods. However, I have installed a small list of add-ons that I consider must-have for XF:
Collapsible Sidebar-For those who want it
Custom BBCode Manager-For those who want to make any custom BBCodes, or just use extras 🙂
LGBThreadRenamer-Not sure if I still need this, but it lets me rename the topic from the topic page
ragtek Most Online User-Honestly, not necessary. I just like it because it's like phpbb's feature and it's not overly obtrusive 🙂
Recent Status List-Gotta have it
Separate Normal & Sticky Threads- Not necessary, but I really recommend it.
TaigaChat- For my premiums and staff, they love it
Tenshi-Latest Thread - I like this mod, and most likely your members will too. Plus if you have an empty sidebar it fills that up 😛
The Happy Place- Puts a little smilies dropdown that's easier than the default one, recommend this.
Xen-Tr.com-Who Has Visited- REEEEEAAAALLLLY recommend this. For all you phpbb lovers, you'll want this 😉
Xenmoods -Added on request and everyone is loving it 🙂
[bd]Banking- Not a necessary add-on, but I need it for PB. Similar to ultimate points 😉
[bd]Tag Me- Looooooooove this! Enables your members to use the @username feature and alerts the member that was tagged. We have a good time with that
 I guess I do have a lot of mods 😛

Points Mod
Quick Reply
CAPTCHA
PM Alert (Always handy for the Admins, eh?)
😉

Reply Box it seems small but not all forums have it. And advance captcha is kinda hard to solve so make sure you have an easy captcha. 😀 LOL.

I personally feel that the mods a forum should install vary depending on the type of forum, the type of person you are aiming your forum at and so on. A group of old ladies on a bingo forum will not want loads of funky features. If you are making a forum aimed at younger, computer literate users then they would like loads of fancy features like moods, profile comments etc.
