I am confused as to how XenForo is bought -- is it just 140 dollars one time? Or is it 140/yr?

Essentially this. Like Invision (which IIRC is $25/6 months), when support/updates need renewal, you can renew at any time (this means you can wait until a major update comes out before you renew).

So your license won't run out if you don't renew with an update? You just won't get updates or support? That is good to know. Though the price you quoted is very reasonable.
