Consequences are needed cause otherwise rules are a joke. However, in a lot of cases, they can be too harsh. What is a way to make rules mean something - without cruel and unusual punishment?

I think it depends on the crime being committed. Sure. I believe some countries like China, North Korea, some Middle Eastern countries, and Chechnya go overboard when someone breaks one of their laws. They're quick to hand out Capital Punishment over petty crimes.

There should always be consequences to our actions. What I don't like is it's not fair. Say, you get pulled over for speeding but you know the cop's family. He writes you a warning whereas anybody else gets a ticket.
