Hey friends!

I currently run a website on ProBoards. We've been considering switching to myBB.

Does anyone know of any new user dummy guides or have any advice you wish you knew when you first started?

Thanks so much! 🙂

I think you’re better off staying at proboards. MyBB isn’t really an upgrade. If you want more flexibility then SMF is a better, more modern solution.

MyBB’s development is very quiet.

I'd go with phpBB3 or SMF before choosing MyBB.

MyBB isn't responsive out of the box so you'll have to add an addon or a new theme to ensure that it's optimized for mobile devices.

SMF and phpBB3 are optimized for mobile and responsive out of the box.

I hope MyBB gets active again. It really was a beautiful forum software back in the day but it just never evolved with the times.

No matter which platform you pick, you'll unfortunately have to start over from scratch since Proboards doesn't allow you to download a database backup of your community. But I agree with everyone here, MyBB just isn't worth it in it's current state.

Actually, now I can finally recommend ForumSpark.

We allow database exports, should you ever require it. We don’t have an importer yet, but we hope to change that soon.

This.

It's a big shame since I've been a MyBB fan for a long time, but they just haven't managed to keep up with the times unfortunately.

Out of the two, if I were starting a forum today, I'd probably go with SMF if talking about free software. If talking about paid, XenForo.

I think it's also a common thing to see a ProBoards forum go over to SMF if they should do so. Like everyone else here has already said, it's sad to be not recommending a software I enjoyed so much years ago.

I used to use MyBB. Back when I used it, it was an awesome platform.

Then mobile got popular, and they seemed to fall into the Stone Age.

If you ever decide to invest in paid software I highly recommend Xenforo 2 where Xenforo 3 is fixing to release with a free upgrade if your license isn't expired.

That's what this site uses. PHPBB isn't too bad though my personal preference would be myBB however either free software is a good choice for either one.
