I need some help/advice with how to deal with people posting content from other sites. If a user of a forum posts, for example, a bbc news article but actually credits the source back to the original site - what problems would this cause me as a forum owner.

I'd obviously rather have unique content - but will this be infringing copyright/causing duplicate content problems? How would you go about dealing with members that do this?

Content is still king in the internet and having a lot of copied stuff lowers your reliability from the search engines. Why copy if you can always provide rewrites? You can do it or you can also have somebody do it for you. If you have the financial freedom to have people work for you, have them rewrite those content for you and you should be safe with that.

there will be more links benefited from your forum in seo terms 😀

I'm not fully understanding but rewriting would be the best opinion but make sure to link back to the orginal source.

Posting an article and giving credits will not negatively affect you in any way, but may actually give you more activity in the long run, so don't combat it, but instead, encourage it.

Googles algorithm's now penalise sites for plagiarised ( copied) content, google can even detect it down to individual phrases, and only credits the earliest content as original, any other after that time/date stamp will be considered a copy or plagiarism.

If you are going to re-write the article, then you must do so in a way that Google will not recognise it as plagiarised content.
Article spinners will not do this for you.

A link back to the original work will not alter this, you may still need the authors permission before posting any material on your site that may infringe copyright, for instance from the BBC.

Yes we all do it, and we all get away with it, but how long for is another matter.

Yes simply plagiarizing content will give you some flags but I can tell you that you won't have problems with users on a forum posting articles from other sites, google won't penalize you for a user's actions.

I am not too sure as to what problems would arise, but I always understood that it was fine as long as you credited the original source. That is what I do and I make sure that my members do the same.

If they post an article without one, then I make sure that I ask for it, and considering the fact that people retweet and repost things all the time and post copies or excerpts of articles on FB and other social sites, then I'd say that if you can get into trouble for posting an article even if you credited the source, then why haven't these other sites gotten into trouble as well, since they do the same thing on a much larger scale?

I am not sure if there is such a thing called original content, unless you were the sole creator and made sure that no one could copy you. An idea is only as original for as long as it takes someone else to copy it.

Thats sort of fine for copyright issues, however you still need permission to use it under copyright.

Good point. Do you think that it would be a better bet to go for the content that provides alternate means of sharing it on other sites? Such as Post to FB, Reddit, Twitter, etc. etc.?

That is pretty much what I've been doing since the beginning, and if the content is on a blog or site without those options, then I briefly mention the article and describe it in my own words, and then post the link for them to read it.

I would guess that as they have a "share" button of some sort, they are not too bothered about it being copied and spread around ( with a credit), after all that in itself is promotion for them ( backlink), newspapers and media sites however do not need the promotion or backlinks, those are the sites you need to be wary of, as most of the authors would be freelance, hence they want to protect their work and income.
