Have you ran any contests on your forum and if you have what were they and how successful where they?

Over at FA we had the FA awards, Not really contests, But we do have a few contests going, "find travis a new username" if quite a successful contest ~smile~

lol yeah, thats what I was going to say. You beat me to this thread. -😉-

I am running a friend referral contest but it's not that popular right now

I've had many, they would work for the time of the contest, then the users would die off and or complain that they did not win.

Contests are good for new forums just to get started and get some activity.

Had one for a free GameFly membership. The user who won couldn't use it because he lives in the UK, and it was for the US.
Too bad it expired.

On my old forum I ran a contest and first prize was £200 and second was £100, I know alot of you cannot afford that amount of money but I got over 300 new members during the week I ran it and 60% of them stayed on.

I don't believe forum contests to be successful unless there are real prizes involved. If we take the battles knockout tournament here for example - i found that to be a real failure, or at least a lower participation rate than i would have expected from a thriving community.

On the other hand, sites such as phpBBhacks.com and get-a-link who offer valuable prizes such as Games consoles and money do really well. I remember the referral contest on get-a-link was extremely successful, and got the forum thousands of posts from it. The current competition on phpBBhacks.com is doing really well too as they are offering games consoles as prizes - i was lucky (to say the least) to get my style submitted into the competition.

I guess it really comes down to how much you're willing to sacrifice for your forum. If the only prizes you're giving out is forum cash, or posts on someone else's forum - don't expect an exciting contest.

I would offer money/ better prizes, but i'm 14 (15 in 2 days 😀) and my forum doesn't generate any money.

I have ran quite a few on my forums. Some were more successful while some were less successful but generally, I see that there is a limit to how successful contests can be. When you have a large forum, people don't seem to join due to large competition but when your forum is small you only have a small number of participants.
