Who all has run a contest on their forum?

What did you do for the contest (referral, posting, etc)? What did you have for the prizes?

Looking to see what other people did to improve my forum. 🙂.

I held a posting contest on General Talk, however it was based on the GT Cash (virtual currency) that each member accumulates over the 3 week period. The prizes were; $40 for the winner, $20 for the runner up and $10 for the person who came third. We also had an additional award too.

I have a posting competition on Webmasters Rule. The prize was a Xenforo license and it got my forum a good few thousand posts. Was very successful.

The thing with posting contests is to look at the results after the contest, say 2-4 weeks after the contest has ended. The activity would have dropped but if it still is greater than the traffic you had before then I would say the contest was a success. Getting the extra traffic during the contest is half way there but it has to be carried on after it has ended.

I try to do something every month or so at Mario Forums. Right now we have a Mario level design contest going on, where you create your own Mario level. 1000 wii points is the prize. Niche specific contests are always the best ones 😉

In the past we've done all sorts of things. Mario kart, post contest, online game tournaments, talent show, art/graphics contests, etc.

Thanks for your feedback, everyone!

What kind of prizes do you suggest for certain niches?

For example, I run a general discussion forum. What prizes would encourage users to post in a posting contest?

@ Teekay - Was your contest a success?

Well the activity increased during the contest and we got some some new members, although some would have signed up anyway so the contest didn't impact the new signups that much. It's only been a couple of days since the contest so I'll wait a week or two more before deciding whether it was a success or not.

During our promo season we offered free vip member status to anyone who registered then and that was pretty successful.. Also offered a free 15$ Itunes gift card redeem code!
