Could 1 member of your forum cause it to fail (not by hacking or anything like that)?

In my opinion if it's the admin, then absolutely yes one member can ruin the whole community. If it's one staff member and the admin refuses to discipline or talk to the individual for offenses then that could also give members a reason to leave. If one person is spamming or purposely kills conversations in threads then theoretically one person can cause a forum to fail if admin/staff members to address the individual or issue.

@Sharon That's the way I was thinking too. If it's a regular member, not so much, but if it's admin/ Staff not doing their job, then yes, a forum can fail. Forums need to be moderated so members feel safe.

If that member is problematic or antagonistic, they could potentially hurt the forum, most definitely. It would be at the discretion of the admins to remove them or let them stay, but there is no question that a hostile member can derail an entire community!

It’s happened to me and now I’m struggling to re-build.

Precisely, it's very difficult when it happens, particularly in the building phases of a community. I had my community hijacked by someone that I considered a friend at the time, he banned my account and demanded a stupid amount of money to get it back. Fortunately I knew how to get everything back and ban him at the same time without having to get in touch with him, but he banned a few others during his tirade and they refused to come back afterwards. That did real damage to that community and we couldn't save it from stagnating and failing. It's really hard when you get one member acting up or acting out and driving others away, it can most definitely kill off a community.

That’s really sad 🙁

My story isn’t as bad but I gave someone admin that I considered a friend he was slack and didn’t return the money I gave him so I mentioned it to him and he cut me off and now it’s hard to promote my site on Twitter because everyone thinks of me negatively.

Lucky I took percussions and revoked his admin powers before he could do any real damage to the site itself plus I carry back ups.

That's an unfortunate situation all around. Both because you're right to cut ties with him, and because it's unfortunate that it's going to be a "he said, he said" situation to the members, and that's harsh when the you know you're right in that situation. I hope you're able to rebuild and move past that with a bigger and better userbase and achieve success!

Seen one of there own staff/owners gone crazy over something and the site goes down

Depending on the size and culture of the forum, I can see the potential of 1 member causing enough issues to make a forum suffer and fail because of it.

I agree. Allowing a member to troll and harass your other members also makes the staff look bad due to inaction of the problem.

He blocked me on Snapchat and he said he didn't want to be friends anymore after spamming my site so I told me I'm done too and blocked him on everything I don't have time to deal with people like that anymore true friends support you.

And I definitely will! 🙂
it's been very slow but hopefully I get there.

Yeah, that's the best possible decision, keep him out of your life and move on as best as possible!

It’s hard because one of the best friends can’t see that his toxic and still talks to him, but I’m going to try my best to keep him out.

Yeah, understandable, totally, but he will find that out for himself in time, hopefully! Just keep on doing your thing!

Agreed, stick to your guns, he's a part of the past, not the future 🙂
