Could you guys tell me...?

hi guys. long time since i hit the road on Forum Promotion. Been sticking in with my music and alot of test's are coming up and been spending more times with my friends, and as you see i am hoping to stick around for another year or so if this place will live, let's just think positive. But let's get back onto the subject.

I previously thought about starting a music site for dummies. I made a bebo page two days ago or more, about helping you to improve hitting the higher and lower notes, writing a song for you, or looking to fill in for someone while they are on vecuation, and more. I was going to include a few compeitions and more, but i was thinking why shall it run on a bebo page as it would get spammed and yes i know you can moderate comments, but it would take a while to reject and accept the ones you want or need and don't want. So the main question is...Should i create a website for this as i think it could be a success, but the consenquences are who will use it if i put my hard work and ddedicationinto it and becomes a ghost town with the tumbleweek rolling away?

So what are you doing asking us? Go make your website, you don't need our opinions, as long as you think it's going to be a success and your willing to make it work, go for it :great:

It's a risk you gotta take, you either do or you don't. It may play in your favor, or it may not that's life.

Yeah, its a risk but what do you have to lose? Domain names are cheap and technically, you don't even need one.. so all you have lose is time and effort and what I have to say is this:

Look at my forum, not the most active but at least it's not completely dead. My first forum was pretty active but not huge.. and for attempt to re-create it since this has failed for the most part. It's not some generic forum anymore, the subject matter makes it harder to find members.

I've been told to just give up, that it was never going to work and for awhile I was paying for a domain nobody was using. I kept trying though because I know what a great resource it can be.

I've learned from my mistakes and I've ben through a few web addresses.. I had a failing forum yet bought a domain for it...

I've migrated from forum software, and started from scratch, loosing users along the way but each step I have realized something I needed was missing.

I can keep going but my point is, I don't regret putting in all that time and effort, yes, it was frustrating.. disappointing and at times even depressing. I really had to ask myself if it was worth it. I wanted to say no so many times but ended saying, yes, it was.

It's still struggling but it's on it's way.

I think what you need to ask yourself is, not if you can do it but if you want to. Ask yourself why you want to do it, what to you want to give your members. If it's an idea your just thinking about but you aren't doing it for any real reason other than you think it could successful/profitable, then it's not as big a deal if you decide not to do it and your more likely to stop trying if it becomes difficult. Anyone can install or register for a forum but to get it active takes work, even for ones that start out well.

If it becomes a ghost town, you can still resurrect it though it wont be easy..

The great thing about the Internet that there is a niche for everybody.. from Twilight fan-girls to big business and anime fan sites to spiritual and philosophical sites or websites that might as well be a can of spam.

You need to put in time for a site let alone a forum that needs to be constantly moderated (assuming we are talking about a forum or at least, as you mentioned... something with comments?)

If you aren't on that much you'll need a good staff.

So how bad do you want it?, because it can be allot of work, but it can often be well worth it.

If you don't have much time to post on a forum, your going to have a hard time managing one.

Also, spending time with friends is also important, you shouldn't put this before those you care about, so just make sure you know what kind of workload it can be.

Not to scare you off though, but at least be prepared to set aside an hour or two a day just for moderating if you have a small staff, mcuh more so if you are doing this all yourself.

Thanks for that man, definetely built up my confidence, think i am going to go ahead and create a forum with a website, but we'll need to see how christmas kicks in for me. 😛

If your primary interest is to provide information that will help other people, you could consider starting a blog or even an ebook site. A blog would take less time to manage and maintain, than a forum and an ebook site could earn you some decent revenue if you can convince people to purchase the book.
