cPanel is not always the solution for a hosting panel.

I'm writing this because I'm not a major fan of cPanel. While it may do things better, I think it's a waste of money. The reason I'm *really* writing this is that I spotted a VERY nice server app for managing your web servers and the like, called Webmin. Think of it as a antidote to cPanel.

It can do a lot of things that cPanel can, like manage DNS, Apache tweaking, etc. I personally find it better than cPanel as it's faster, lighter and doesn't require extensive configuration (just install, point your browser to <server ip>:10000, log in as root and you've got everything at your finger tips.

A few things that I like about it is that it alerts you if monitored servers go down or services start getting overloaded.

So yeah, Just thought I'd let you know in case someone wanted an alternative to cPanel. Has anyone checked it out?

Cheers! 🙂

Thats cool, however I have never paid for Cpanel really, all of my hosts and servers had them already. I do think I have a Cpanel installation on a disc in the office though

There are plenty others such as Plesk, DirectAdmin and of course the free kluxo.

I personally prefer either DA or cPanel, just for the ease of it's uses.

I like Virtualmin GPL. It is freeware and has an automated install script for a clean Linux OS. I wrote a short article about why Virtualmin GPL is a good freeware alternative to cPanel and Plesk. I have used both cPanel and Plesk extensively. They are good for their intended audience and purpose, but Virtualmin GPL is a solid offering for the do-it-yourself webmaster who has some Linux administration capabilities.
