So while doing my holiday shopping a few weeks ago I noticed a significant amount of people with cracked screens on their phones. Not small cracks either. Like these cracks were deep and major. Like someone took a hammer to the screen. This is what happens when people drop or accidentally sit on their phones. But yet, I still see these people using their phones like it's no big deal.

I am actually surprised the touch screen functionality even still worked considering how bad of shape some of these phones appeared to be in. But even so, visually? How can one tolerate reading small text and words on a cracked screen? It takes awhile to adjust to reading digital text on a handheld device first of all because it's obviously smaller than a PC or laptop. Also there are outside factors like too much sun sometimes, glare, elements, etc. But these minor nuisances must be magnified by a lot when you screen looks like a spider web.

So why don't these people just get their screens fixed, repaired or get a whole new phone? Doesn't insurance cover this sort of thing to some degree?

Sometimes people don't get them fixed because they don't have the money. Repairs can be costly or take a fair bit of time (which if you need your phone for work... means money).
Some cellphones are harder to get parts for than others. A mid tier Android phone with a smaller screen might be harder to get a screen for than an iphone. This may simply be due to how many people use that particular type of phone. I mean if lots of people use the same phone might be good to keep those parts handy. But for a rarer phone, probably not worth wasting the shelf space to keep parts. Though they usually won't order in parts until they have the phone, just so this way you don't say to order it then go with someone else to fix it. (Too easy to get screwed out of money that way.)

Othertimes people don't fix broken screens because they're intending on upgrading soon. If you're planning to buy a newer phone in a few days or even a week it doesn't really make a ton of sense to pay for a repair when you're switching soon.

In my sorority, a cracked iPhone screen is a status symbol

Personally, I couldn’t deal with a cracked screen. It would totally hinder my already poor eyesight and drive me insane. Those that do deal with it often can’t afford the cost of fixing their phone. Most insurance plans don’t cover cracked screens especially after a certain period of time.

A cracked screen is a relatively cheap repair if you go to the right place. Why suffer when you can get it fixed in 45 minuets?

I know that I myself couldn't live with a cracked phone but I know a lot of people do and go about life as if nothing's wrong. I'm guessing people fear it's both costly and time consuming but I do know places that will offer the service cheaply and quickly.
