It may be a long shot but I'm seriously considering hitting Craigslist aggressively within the next couple of months and see if I can generate any "local" interest for our forum. Craigslist is used all over the world so... I think it may work. Has anyone else tried using Craigslist before?

I......um..huh, to be quite honest I never thought about advertising on Craigslist. Since it's just advertising I really don't see how any increased harm can come about, just be ready for some odd people signing up. 😛

However I will say that Craigslist isn't ALL bad; the craigslist for LA is horrible but for other cities it might not be as bad. It all depends on the local area that you are in and the craigslist you are visiting.

Promoting a forum in Craigslist is a bad idea and a waste of time. You may end up increasing the bounce rate for your forum.

Better you can try out forum advertisements to increase your popularity in search engines.

I think you all are dismissing this idea too quickly. This can work, for some types of forums.

FP wouldn't benefit much, nor would any other promotion forum, but if I wanted to create a forum for my university or my hometown, CL would be a great resource.

Open your minds.

Geoffrey has an excellent point - I think it may be beneficial for some forums in specific niches. Ours for instance is mainly about Languages and Travel and we can target our ads around those two topics. I agree it may not be the best idea for promotion or webmaster sites.

I read this topic all wrong! I thought you were referring to advertising a product. Sorry!

Geoffrey is on the ball with this one. CL is decent for certain types of websites. Envision a forum about furniture, interior design, cheap furnishings, or local events such as Geoffrey's proposal. It's easy to see that those types of forums or communities could benefit from Craigslist.

If you are going to use Craigslist though, make sure your audience is targeted. Don't put your ad or link in every city's page or you will most likely be banned for spamming. Watch out for putting your link in unrelated sections or you'll face an awful bounce rate, as a user above mentioned. You should seriously consider offering some sort of product related to your forum, or a package deal (from an online retailer) as a streamline to your forum from Craigslist, if you are serious about your forum's topic.

I suppose it couldn't hurt. You're not meeting a stranger in some parking lot to sell them you're microwave after all. 😛

I am new to this forum and saw this post, and said Hmmmmm .... To me it does not sound like a bad idea at all... Like others have said, you are not meeting folks to sell items .. You are just there to promote your forum.. So on that note just be ready for anything and have your blocks up so you don't get hacked .... My thoughts

It's an interesting concept, definitely in the case of language and travel I could see it being well used and it's a great idea.

I think craigslist would be a great avenue for that, and perhaps even job type forums. People need a community for tips to get a job, so I could see people being interested especially if advertised the right way. 🙂

I agree that it probably only benefits certain niches, though I've never personally used Craigslist for anything.

The purpose of a classifieds advertising site is to carry ads. Any kind of ads. But if you read many of the comments posted by frustrated Internet marketers, it seems that Craigslist hates advertising - literally.

Not sure what market you can reach in your locality - your CL ad, if they let it live, will not spread the word globally, and will be lost soon from view as it slides down the daily list. The only thing CL has still going is the first-to-market advantage, but they seem bent on destroying that by making advertisers' lives miserable.

Fortunately, there is a plethora of other classified sites out there where you can post ads for free. On our own free classifieds advertising site, for example, we recognize that forums and blogs are important enough to deserve a distinct place of their own to advertise, with dofollow links and no geographic restrictions.

Considering the history of craigslists and the potential harm it could bring to your site. No, I would never consider advertising on such a site. You also have to consider the safety of your members on your own site. There are a lot of dangerous people that use craigslist. Drug addicts, possible murderers, etc. It isn't something I would recommend anyone to use.

Did you try them in the end?

Thank you for the bump MasterA. I've actually pushed this idea on the backburner and haven't thought about it since. This is something that I do want to try though and will definitely dive in first chance. Anything would help at this point I think.
