Has anybody here created a forum on a topic simply because they had the desire to learn about the topic?

For example, you don't know anything about cars, BUT you want to learn about them. Therefore, you would create a car forum so you can learn and discuss about cars. < - Just an example.

Have you ever done something like that before?

Yes. I created my last forum, FS with no graphics experience. (that was the main focus of the forum) I actually learned quite a bit from all the members who join with graphics experience. While having experience helps, starting a forum for the sake of learning new things on the subject isn't that bad.

Yeah, a couple of years ago I started a forum about pet scorpions, even though I never knew anything about them. Unfortunately my members noticed my lack of knowledge regarding pet scorpions, and decided I apparently wasn't good enough to be their administrator. So they moved on.

And I was sad.

I would say it's risky..I wouldn't really like a forum where the administrator wasn't that knowledgeable in that particular field. He doesn't need to be the BEST in that, but at least knowing the basics certainly helps.

That's probably why something like this doesn't usually work. A forum is a place for users to discuss different aspects of a particular topic, and meet others who share the same interest. At least most of the time it is. When the owner of the site doesn't know anything about the topic in question, how can you start to get the unique content up to start with? How can you keep members interested, and how can you actively partake in discussion to promote the flow of your website when you don't know how to discuss something?

I've never done something like this, I've always had a good grip on the subject of any site I'm starting.

My old forum Semiotic was for my own benefit.
I loved it. I was developing my skills in writing, and loved developing my opinions even more through active debate.

So rewarding.

I've never done that. I've only created forums on topics that I knew information about.

Never done it but I think its a great way to learn more about it especially if the members help you.

I am staying in Japan and made this forum for people learning the Japanese language. I suggest every admin have intermediate knowledge at least to run a forum on the aforementioned topic. If you don't, it's like starting a business with know knowledge of taxes.

I have never done that. Sounds foolish to me.

No, I need to be educated about a topic before I run a full discussion forum about it 😛
