I’m sure there is someone here who have sold a forum for profit. One writer friend said that a dynamic forum can sell for thousands of dollars. Pardon my ignorance on this matter but I was really surprised that a forum can cost that high. Anyway, if that is true then maybe a forum is a good business. Create one, get members and then sell. But I know it is easier said than done.

Yeah its not easy to sell your own forum, especially if it has active members already. But if you already lose your interest and passion in running the forum then its better to sell it than let it die and become a dead forum.

I agree. I'd rather sell a forum, than let it die, because it shows somebody else is willing to work on the site. You could just sell the forum, and still be an admin, you just don't own it anymore.

You're right, it's easier said than done. Creating a forum is probably the easy part but getting an active member base and keeping it active long enough to sell it is where the hard part comes in. I know a forum can be sold for a pretty good chunk of change but it all depends on how big you can grow that forum, especially if you are able to grow it in a short amount of time.

I'd rather not sell it because someone might try to make it into something that the original owner didn't intend. However, though, my concern would depend on how personally attached I was to the forum.

I've seen many forums just die out over the years when their owners could have made a quick buck instead.

Somewhat strangely enough, I've already received three offers to purchase my gaming forum that I only started over four months ago, though I've declined each of the proposals xD

I don't know if I could ever sell a forum if I ever started one. I just could not watch another person take over and do not as good as a job as I did as an owner.

A niche on a subject I hate (but just want cash) would be easy to sell.

Did the offer xxx$ or xxxx$ ?

The last offer was approaching the mid xxx$

When I created my forum, I didn't create to sell but if I get buyer I might sell it so that I can fund my new forum.

I've seen people sell large forums, but these days it might be a bit difficult to get a forum to sell. There are still people who prefer to purchase existing forums rather than start one from scratch, so there's still a market. I personally wouldn't create a forum for the sole purpose of selling it later down the line, I rather have a community to talk about my favorite things with no fear of it being taken offline because I'm in control of it.

Creating a forum to sell later would be a bit difficult for me. I am always emotionally attached to projects that I begin. So, starting one and having plans to sell it at a particular time won't work at all for me.

If it is about whether there is a big market out there for it, I agree that one exists.

I don't see anything wrong with selling a forum that you have built for a very long period of time. The most important thing is that you have been able to get some money from what you have built for a while.

My personal view is that if an admin is creating a forum purely with the purpose of selling it in the future, it's going to be significantly harder to make that forum a success and so eventually sell it. The biggest and best forums tend to generally start because the admin has a real passion for the subject matter, not because they're interested in making a few bucks.

You're absolutely right—it’s easier said than done! While a well-established forum can sell for thousands (or even more), its value depends on several factors: niche, active user base, engagement levels, monetization methods, and overall traffic. Simply creating a forum, gaining members, and selling it isn’t as straightforward as it sounds.

Many forums take years to build a loyal community, and maintaining engagement requires consistent effort—quality content, good moderation, and sometimes even financial investment. Plus, forums thrive on organic interaction, so if members sense that the community is just a quick flip project, it could hurt long-term growth.

That said, if you’re passionate about a topic and willing to nurture a community, a forum can become a valuable asset over time.

I once created a forum just for the purpose of selling it. Sadly, it took 3 years to sell the forum.
