Crowd Topics

The item Off Topic Boards has been updated:

Changed the name from Off Topic Bulletin Boards to Off Topic Boards...OT Boards for short with a new URL https://otboards.com

Just wanted to provide some constructive criticism here:

This forum looks and feels like a clone of Off Topix.

It shares the same abbreviation "OT" and is using the same skin/theme as Off Topix.

Also it has almost almost all the same categories/ forums and they are laid out in almost the same locations as the original OT.

With this theme you can select colors for each category of forums and those colors are the same as Off Topix. Both forums use blue for the 1st category (News / announcements section), both forums use green for the 2nd category, both forums use red for the forums/internet category, both forums use purple for the bottom (media) category. These colors aren't preset (everything is orange by default) so both forums having the same colors for each category is no accident.

I also see several of the same exact discussion threads on both forums.

Not that any of that really matters to me as I no longer own OT, just thought I'd share my observations. In my experiences, forums that look and feel just like another forum tend to fail. Why would people want to visit a low activity clone when they can just go experience the real thing and have tons of other active members to interact with?

You have a higher chance of success if you're offering your audience something they cannot get from somewhere else. If you can accomplish that then you might see more people flocking to your community because it is unique and different.

I've been working on changing things up with the new domain and look...waiting on Uniform to be v5 version so I can switch the theme over... I have had over the years offtopicx.com, discussbb.com, offtopicbb.com, forumsbb.com and now trying to get away from those names to go for something unique with OT...OT wasn't suppose to go for Off Topix at all.

You seem to change the name of it every couple of months. Is there something you hope to achieve from doing that?

Just wanted to get away from "BB" on the end of domain names...this will be the last one, also moved away from XenForo to IPS 5 with it.

I guess I don't see too much beyond what's "general" anyway for @Phun's site to be considered overly similar when compared to Off Topix. All the forums he has listed are the ones I would expect.

Pretty much.

I do see what Neb means:

But generally, general forums are too general to be different.
They really are unless you place an ask/question forum at the top of nodes Like "Ask computer questions - ask technology questions" , which would place a general forum apart from the rest, but this would place an emphasis on a ask/question forum as well. However, it would set a general forum apart from the rest. However, it could also be apart of a broader section like general technology and computer, but mainly focused on answering questions. Just a thought.

It's something that quora and Justanswers(among other sites) have done well with their "ask questions" areas, but I think it could also bold well with a general forum as well, especially if it's mixed in wIth the main foundation of general forum.

New theme looks great. I especially like the blue and purple background. Personally, I'd set one of those default. I would also remove the coloring from the forums.1745777592407.webp

I dig the new theme it looks great! Best of luck with your forum!

OT Boards now has over 700 threads and also 1540 posts...
Working on the theme here soon...making it a little bit better on the forums and adjusting some of the settings again.
Just a little bit of an update.
