Do you ever go through and look at activity and inactivity among your staff members? Like who's contributed more time than who and who has the largest post count based on that, who's on more often and who isn't? Do you demote or just leave staff as is? Say if a staff member hasn't been active for over 2 months. Do you keep them signed on staff?
If they have not been active for two months, they would have been gone before 2 months that's for sure. =P
I do go over activity each week to see how many posts they seem to have done, what kind of posts, etc. Usually I do demote them if they don't post as often as they should, but my forum is a little harsher than most when it comes to being staff so it's a toss up. I think leaving them as staff unless they really die and don't contribute to the community at all for a few weeks is the best bet, though.
I do this alot, actually! I often get excuses from my staff like they are busy with other things or they are sick or having internet problems, then I see them on other places being active. If they can't get on my forum, or they don't want to, I will usually fire them. I tal to them multiple times before I demote them, of course. I want active staff that can be there to do things when I can't.
Two months is a pretty long time, so I'm sure they'd be demoted by then. Unless of course, they had a valid reason why they couldn't be active. Activity is key when you're staff - you're representing the forum and you might come across as looking bad if you don't put the effort in being around often. 😛
I would demote any inactive staff if they're gone for longer than 2 weeks tbh, especially since these are people you rely on. If they have a good reason that's one thing but most of the time it's BS so I let them go. Never let anybody feel like they'll keep their position forever.
I usually include a long activity period as a requirement for becoming staff so I don't really have a problem with that. As long as they let me know when and how long they'll be away I'm fine with it. If they didn't let me know and it's been about 2 or 3 weeks I would probably demote them. It'd probably be shorter if I saw they were on other forums or websites as that would be pretty rude and mean they would really have no excuse not to be participating on mine if they can be elsewhere.
I don't really have a system in place to demote inactive staff members. I will however contact them if they have not shown up in a while to mainly see if everything is okay.
I encourage my staff to be active. They usually remain active through encouragement. 🙂
