So I'm starting my latest forum, Juungla. Juungla is a new general discussion community. Take that in mind. I am using Mybb. I worked out a deal with another user on FP to obtain our own custom theme/style. I want to make sure it's appealing to as many people as possible as it's an investment. What are some things many people tend to like? What are some things I should avoid? Let me know. 🙂 2rep for all who share in this thread.

Make it very different (layout-wise) from the default theme. Forum Promotion's current theme is a great example (even though we're talking about phpBB here and not MyBB, but it still applies nonetheless). When I make my themes, I modify it to my liking, and I do it extensively, to make it at least semi-unique (I also have to modify the language files very extensively, and thus it will also render regular MyBB themes useless).

Anyways, it's really all about uniqueness. Other than that, as long as it looks good and clean, then you're good.

Do not make the theme burn eyes, do not use a dark theme, get a custom set of graphics made with it. All I have for the now.

I planned on going with a light theme. Preferably blue as my primary color. 🙂

I prefer light over dark (however a dark background with a light inside like FP's skin is acceptable to me). Any colour is good, though blue is very common. Blue could very well work, though. Just limit your contrast (or lack of contrast) and it'll be great.

I'd appreciate if you'd expand on "contrast". 🙂

Contrast being difference in colours. In my case, I usually refer to the text colour vs. the text background's colour. Contrast is more effective in background vs. background, like in FP's skin (dark outside, bright inside) rather than dark background, bright text.

How about I post what I have planned and you all let me know what you think?

I was thinking of making the outside background light blue with slightly darker diagonal stripes. (Reasonably thick) Nothing extremely noticeable but nothing not noticeable. Controlled.

I was thinking of making the categories light blue, same as the one in the background. I was thinking of putting a cloud that goes from white, then fades out into the stripes. (Hard to picture how that would look).

As for board backgrounds I see a super light blue. I have no idea for new/old icons.

Sounds like it can be done, really. Uniqueness is the key, same with the icons (on, off, offlock). There's a way you can use png images over gifs by editing the template if you need to.

I'm currently making the custom theme for you. It may take a while though.
