Do you make your own themes or edit themes to fit you? Do you find customs to be better? Whats the pros and cons of a Custom theme? Whats the pros and cons of a free theme.

When I had a forum I used a free theme but had custom imageset.
Custom Theme
Pros: It is unique.
Cons: You have to pay for it.

Free Theme
Pros: It is free.
Cons: It is not unique and there be at least 100 people useing theme your useing.

I try and make sites as unique as possible, yet familiar at the same time. This usually involves editing a pre-made theme and going from there, with slight edits to the code and image set.

I would never use a default or premade theme without editing it at least a little.

We used ther default PB's style for almost a year; we did make changes, in colors, and buttons and the banner; but back in April, someone came to me with an idea for a custom made theme; and he knew what he was doing. And it completely changed the forum. We had around 240 memebrs it took a year to gain.

Since we got the custom look, since 3 months agpo, we have over 500 memers. double what it took us a year to get.

So, yes, getting a custom theme did wonders for our forum.

We went from this

DD-1.webp

And today use this

FD11-11.webp

But, all skins are still selectible for those who prefer the darker look.

I did try to make myself a custom theme but since I've got little knowledge on CSS and don't know which elements go where, I can't really do it. I can only rely on pre-made themes as my forum has one. Haven't seen other forums that use the Light Blue theme though 😛

I'll probably try making my own theme in the future.

That is wrong, lol. People can build there own. Like I did. Still, having some troubles though.

I was talking about a average admin. Most admins don't know lot about CSS which means they can't make there own.

yeah. unless you use google to teach you how to edit all the theme files lol

It all depends for me.

Alot of times i will heavily edit a theme.

However I have been known to make themes.

That's the issue these days isn't it? Most admins should know the basic xHTML / CSS skills to make a decent style. I know for a fact I could, and I will be making two fully custom phpBB styles and a fully custom xHTMl / CSS page as well by the end of the year.

Custom themes set you apart, that's the bottom line.

I find custom themsd to be a huge perk.It makes the board have more of an original look and not the same as every other board.

I don't use anything but Custom themes for that matter.

My board currently has 2 custom themes created by Xstinct that will never get released to the public (even if we ever closed down) and I'm extremley happy with them as their about the best themes I've ever seen.

All of the graphics on my board are also custom, which he made to go with the themes...you can't beat that.=P

He's a great guy/friend and I apprecaite everything he does for CC. ~_^
