Or maybe, we need less awful ways of verifying someone's identity.

I suggest that you do not visit the Dark-Web unless you're willing to take the risk.
Since the Dark-Web is filled with a lot of Illegal-Content such as Hitman-Services, Illegal-Pornography, Drugs etc. One wrong move on any of those types of Sites(Or even being on a Honey-Pot) then you could be one of the lucky people to be arrested for whatever you did or trying to do on the Dark-Web.
The Dark-Web is not a place for people to just go and have a laugh on. It's not a place where you can just put in your Credit-Card Details and order something from some sketchy Site(But why would you even do that anyway, putting in Personal-Information just increases your chances of getting caught). The Dark-Web is the Criminal-Underground of the WorldWideWeb. Yeah, sure, you can look around but just don't do anything stupid or do something that can easily reveal who you are.
If you're going to browse the Dark-Web. I suggest that you use Tor, a VPN and use Linux instead of Windows as Linux(Except for some Distros like Ubuntu) doesn't have any Spyware that can be sent back to the Government which can be used to track you down.
