How many of you here would really like to see a fan forum for the upcoming game dead island? I see a lot of potential in the game and I'm sure that it will have many fans. But how many people here would actually like to be apart of one?

Also, what types of things would you like to see on the fan forum?

Open to all suggestions/opinions. 🙂

I think it would be great, but generally these kinds of forums die after games get released and get old. That's why I have a gaming forum, I don't wish to keep creating new forums.

Maybe what you could do is start a forum that is heavily concentrated on the Dead Island game but that could be made more general if the game becomes less popular in the future.

To do this you would probably have a section for other gaming discussion and try to keep the forum name a little bit generic. Hence, "Dead Gaming" or "Island Gaming" could be more suitable names for your forum than "Dead Island Gaming". I know you wouldn't be using those names, they are just examples to explain what I mean.

Asking this kind of question on FP isn't such a great idea, majority of the userbase here aren't gamers. Anyway as mentioned above, once the game is released the forum will almost certainly die down, the only exception to this is forums which are based around a big time game which the forum would become useful for players even after the game is released (titles such as COD, BF, WoW, RuneScape, etc.) are a great idea, although very hard to get off your feet due to other various gaming forums out there which are huge.

I can see your point Nathan, however I don't fully agree with it for two reasons.

1. We actually have quite a lot of gamers here on FP, some of whom own successful gaming forums.
2. Other forum admins can give helpful advice and suggestions to someone setting up a gaming forum, even if they themselves are not into gaming and don't own a gaming forum themselves.

You have good points too, but:

1. Being a gamer and running a gaming forum are two different things, anyone can play games but not everyone has the ability to run a successful gaming forum. I have yet to see a gaming forum advertised on FP with more than 500,000 posts that's worthwhile to join and active, not dead (this is what I think a successful forum is.)
2. There's no real point of someone who runs a anti-gaming forum to give someone who runs a gaming forum to give advice now is there? This is just an example, but it works for pretty much all genres. However some tips that other genre admins give can be beneficial, if you change it to suit your needs.

Might not have cracked 500,000 but GameRout was always in the top 5 of google (just look at the competition) and gaining members constantly. I had to sell it though as I had the ability to run a successful gaming forum but didn't really play games. I ended up selling it to someone who didn't have the ability to run a successful forum and it didn't last too long after I sold it. Actually, it has happened to every site I've sold.

Well then why ask any questions about any genre? Just because one does not have a site in that field doesn't mean that they have never thought about it or never joined a forum of that genre. Nor does it mean they can't take a minute and put themselves in that position.

Im basing it off forums now, I remember gaming riot and you did decently. Although not what I think is 'successful' but everyone is different.

What I said doesn't apply to all scenarios like I said in the last section, but putting yourself in that position doesn't mean you should give someone advice especially when you have no idea what to give.

The person is not required to take any advice that they do not believe will help them. I've had members say that pink would be a great color to have on my site... don't quite agree that zombies and pink go along to well. One also has to remember that the vast majority of forum owners here at FP are not very experienced and have not had forums that have topped their genre or even cracked the 5 digit mark. In essence you have many unexperienced administrators getting advice from other low experienced administrators.

The best advice I could give is to look at sites related to what you are interested in starting and observe what they do. Then do it better, and add more.

Foe example for this dead island game. If the competition has the admin posting new articles when he finds them you can get the jump on that by grabbing the dead island sites feed and having it auto posted when a new item shows up. In essence you beat the manual poster and have the news up faster.

Why don't you create the forum, and chase your idea? I don't play games, but if you see potential in the game, go for it, and start your community.

Fan forums = having galleries = news about the game, review, and things like that. You could even giveaway a copy of the game in a simple contest - based around activity.

-- 06 May 2011, 10:49 --

Dynamik, I say go for it. Provide the latest news about the game, host some contests, give out free copies, etc.

Yeah but the only problem is inexperienced admins will take the advice without even thinking about it and applying it to their own forum. Ive seen this done many times, as per your example.

Yep looking at other sites and improving on what they do is a great idea.

I agree with that and haven't said otherwise.

One of our regular members is the owner and Admin of a hugely successful RPG forum with over 3 million posts.

What do you mean by an "anti-gaming forum"? If you mean a forum that's not about gaming then your statement is untrue. Admins can give excellent advice to other Admins, even if they are in completely different niches. This is something that applies to all walks of life - I'd love to get some business advice from Richard Branson, even though he doesn't have experience in my industry.

If I were you, I wouldn't make it because I'm pretty sure the company who created the game would probably make an official forum for it.

Anyone heard of the movie that they're suppose to be making off of this game?
