On some forums I visit, the staff/moderators talk openly about behind the scenes issues going on with the forum, even exposing problems with the forum/staff that should probably be kept private. Does this type of situation ever happen on your forum where a forum moderator exposes staff chat publicly? If so, how do you handle it? Do you reprimand the moderator or take their title?
Thankfully that never happened to me. Unfortunately I am not tolerant about secrets of staff members being leaked to the public, so I'll be rather strong about it, since well, it's a secret. If I were of higher authority I would disable his moderation ability/duty temporarily while investigating the matter. The punishment varies, I guess, depending on the matters leaked/how serious the effect is. If I were on same or lower level with the suspect, I'd make sure I report the case.
I would also take a very strong line on that kind of thing. Breaking confidentiality is a very serious issue. I don't allow any discussion of mod actions in public by anyone. If a staff member did it I would be having strong words with them, and if they did it again they'd be out (anyone can make a simple mistake, of course, and that should be taken into account). I have known staff members resign in a blaze of glory, attacking other staff members publicly, and revealing confidential information about them - the only way to deal with that, IMO, is to use the big ban hammer, and delete any offending messages.
Its happened before, I prompted the moderator that he was breaking one of the moderator rules. Me and the moderator came to a consensus and the issue was fixed. 😛
I remember when a staff member here recently did this through Skype in the FP skype chat, and it made me very cautious that he was throwing around information about the user from their user notes.
They would not be staff on my forum anymore. If I cannot trust you, then you simply will not be there. Although, I would definitely question that person's motive in airing dirty laundry like that.
