Has anyone made the tough decision to sell ads on their site privately (rather than going through other sites, means) and if so how did you find your purchasers? And was it successful for you to start selling your own ads?

merk51 as you know we sell ads directly from here on FP and I also sell ads directly on my business forum. Normally I only post those ads on the sites themselves, truth is I should be promoting those ad slots elsewhere. The very least I should be doing is promoting the FP ad slots on my business forum and vice versa.

It really isn't difficult to start selling ads on your own site. All you need to do is put up an "Advertise Here" link to a page or forum topic with details on the types of ads you offer and outline some of the benefits of advertising on your site.

I've never had any real issues dealing with advertisers. Probably because I always require payment before the ad is published. Requiring payment upfront is something I recommend. If you do that and don't make false promises as to what your advertising can deliver you should be fine. In fact you shouldn't really promise that your advertising can deliver anything, e.g. that an advertiser will get a certain number of sales or visits by advertising on your site, because there are many factors such as the quality of the advertiser's offer, which are outside of your control.

Thanks Fergal,
I guess my main worry/concern is that people wont see the advertise here links - but I will work on it and hopefully get something up - as at the moment my site has three sites built into it, all networked and I was going to test the waters with my newest site to see if I could sell the advertising for cheap prices, then move up and offer for the medium site before turning the big site into an advertisement machine 🙂

I have to say though I love what you have here on FP and am hoping our campaigns work as I know how important it is to receive income to assist in growth, and I absolutely love what you have done with the advertising beside the reply box - I think that could be genious if I could get it to work on my sites.

Thanks for the information, I will definately begin looking into it and hopefully will be able to come here soon offering advertising to any/all of my sites once I finalize the areas/details.

Did you find setting prices easy or was it a bit of give and take eg: did you decide these are your prices and that is it, or did you have to stop and think cheap to sell the advertisements?

Thanks for your kind words on Forum Promotion merk51. Putting an "Advertise Here" link on every page of your site is a good idea. Obviously the more visible it is the more potential advertisers will see it. However, people who see your site and who are interested in advertising on it will actually look for that "Advertise Here" link. Others will look for your "Contact" page / link and request details of advertising slots through that.

As regards to pricing ads, we tweaked them over time. When I first posted our advertising options some of our prices were too low and some were too high. More advertisers wanted the lower priced ads and the ads priced too high didn't get any takers. It really was a case of supply and demand, when demand for a particular ad slot was high we increased the price a little and if demand was low we reduced the price a little. This brought us to the prices we have now and that we have been offering for quite some time.

Thanks for all the words Fergal,
I have added advertising slots, an advertising page and was even able to set up something like the quick reply and so am happy - now i just have to sell them 😀
