Have you ever payed for or used a dedicated server?

I have, my Chat Bam site runs on The Planet, and we are on a dedicated server. I choose dedicated because there are no worries. Excellent Uptime, fastest speeds, and it is just awesome to have dedication.

I haven't, I don't think I could afford to as I hear it's expensive.

I'm sure Bitcove will be on one at some point, no choice really. We had planned to go with one to start with, but we decided it was best to save the money and start with a VPS, and upgrade as needed.

I love the thought of a dedicated server, just your sites and a 100mbps-1gbps line ^.^

The Hat Tipper, that sounds very expensive and an unnecessary expense, unless your forum is extremely busy. Forum Promotion is on a shared hosting account with Hawk Host it runs very well most of the time. Have you considered a VPS?

My business forum is on a VPS with Servint.

I completely agree. Dedicated servers are about $125-$200 a month, so that's between $1500 and $2400 a year, which is a waste of money for a site so small.
THT, may I ask how you can afford that?

We have racks in data centres, never had a dedicated server myself, only a VPS.

Yeah, What is the best way to host a project that could go big? And will probably bring in a ton of uploads page vists ect.. monthly?

If I was going to do a project and thought it could go big, then I would look at maybe http://vps.net. I use them for two projects of mine, VPS. Good price and they run by nodes so when you run out of your allowance, just simply add another node, that simple 🙂 Have a look around and go with what you feel comfortable with.

I was thinking the same thing, Dedicated Servers are extremely expensive.

I don't have one myself and don't have the money for one and I wouldn't need one at the moment anyway. I won't in the future either.

I don't think I'll ever get near a VPS again unless a forum I make grows very big. The only time I used a VPS was when running a host. Don't see the point in a dedicated server costing a fortune when you don't need it for a small forum.

@Fergal and Kristue: I get my dedicated hosting for free because I had helped out the owner of the company before.
