So I was just browsing the phpBB support forum, and found a topic involving a user why phpBB doesn't support quick reply as standard.

I did a bit of topic through other related topics, and found that the developers don't want to add it as standard because they feel it would turn phpBB into a "chat system" as opposed to a "forum system"...regardless of the thousands of people who want to see it made default.

What are your thoughts on this? Surely the developers can't think that clicking a button to reply is any less "chat-system like" than being able to reply from the topic. Yes, it does lower functionality in that formatting text takes a few seconds longer and some versions of quick reply don't support smilies etc.. but in my opinion that's no reason to not make it default.

phpBB 3.0.x is closed for feature additions, but 3.2 is still open.

Do you think phpBB should have quick reply as standard?

I think it should be standard. Everyone uses it, I always see people have installed it on their forum. Some people cannot install mods, so it would benefit them. I think it can cause members posting to turn into spam in forum games.

Its definatly a feature I would like to see implemented.

I think it should be as it is the most requested feature and they could always have it possible to be turned on/off in the acp as that way the few people that dislike quick reply can turn it off.

I think it should be. It wouldn't turn them into a chat system at all.

Both IPB and VB have it installed by default so why not phpBB.

phpBB have a different opinion of where they want the software to go. vb have decided to make vb more of a social networking/chat software so that is why they have all the chatty features and myspace profiles and stuff. And even quick reply.

phpBB just want to be a forum software and see quick reply as starting to take them down the same road as vb (where they don't want to go).
